I know what you're thinking, and yes, it's about time that we had a new Chrono Trigger game. It's one of the most exciting RPGs of all time and an absolute tour de force on the SNES, and as we've reached 30 years since the original game first came out, the internet is convinced that a new game is on the way, partly fueled by an Elusive Interview with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii.
Sometimes, interviewees say a little too much more than they should. Can you remember Mark Ruffalo revealing that everyone was going to die in Infinity War? Well sometimes, guests play their cards close to their chests and fob off answers, but that can be just as telling, especially when the guest seems as cagey as Yuji Horii was when asked questions about Chrono Trigger.
According to Pocket Tactics, Horii appeared on a livestream episode of KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku and was asked whether Square Enix were working on something big for Chrono Trigger. His response - 'I can't talk about that'. He goes on to give another response of 'If I say that, you'll figure it out,' when pressed about future plans. Clearly he's got inside information about what's going on, but what is it?
It's most likely that we're going to see a remake of Chrono Trigger for the Switch 2, perhaps getting the same treatment as Link's Awakening got when it came to the Switch. Perhaps we're going to get a brand new Chrono Trigger game to appease the fans who have stood by the series for so long.
Time is running out for the 30th Anniversary celebrations; we've got until March 2026 to find out what Square Enix are up to. We already know that Nintendo can just shadowdrop titles without any prior warning like with the Metroid Prime Remaster, so there's a chance they could just announce this on Christmas Day as an extra 'thank you' to their customers.
I'm hoping that Horii's elusive answers mean that tensions are high about keeping an imminent announcement a secret, and that I won't have to wait long to find out what's going on!
