As I mentioned in this week's newsletter (it's free by the way, you should join), the retro gaming news is going wild at the moment because brands are trying to begin the hype for their products that are likely going to be released in Q3/Q4 of this year to grab the "Christmas Bag" so to speak.
Retroid has been quiet for a while, if you ignore their recent update to the 128GB Retroid Pocket 6, so it's good to see they've been quiet for a reason.
Retroid have officially teased their upcoming retro handheld on their social pages, showing off a dark image of the handheld with the name of the device being "Pocket Nova". It looks like it's going to be a portable device, and Retroid have stated that it's going to feature a 4:3 OLED display, and not just any OLED display, a "modern OLED" display.

The image shows a less rounded handheld in comparison to Retroid's old Retroid Pocket Mini (which is now discontinued), and if I saw this image without any Retroid branding, I'd believe it was ANBERNIC's RG477M. I think what we will see is a portable, and very capable 4:3 device with a 4.5" display designed in Retroid's playful way.
The "Nova" in the name makes me believe this could feature a very bright display. Nova is known in the astronomy world for explaining a bright star, so perhaps Retroid are leaning into the display heavily to give something to the retro handheld niche that other competitors aren't. But that's just me speculating; there's very little to go by right now. No release date, no pricing, no specs, just this image above.
Though I did try asking Retroid's social manager some questions, and all he could give was that "it's coming soon" and there will be multiple colour options on release day. I pester him a lot, so I appreciate any new information he can give Retro Dodo readers right now. We'll keep you updated with more info when we hear it, but in the meantime, I'm excited about this one. Retroid make remarkable handhelds.
