If you know your ROM hacks like the back of your hand, then you'll no doubt know all about the trials and tribulations of Kaizo games and levels. They're the hardest of the bunch, the immovable objects that meet your unstoppable gaming skills head-on and watch you crumble into dust. Pokémon Platinum Kaizo from SHF, aka Sinister Hooded Figure, has just released for fans of the DS Classic, and it's already making gamers weep.

If this is your first time checking out a Kaizo ROM Hack, then let me explain. Platinum Kaizo is a file that you download and patch onto a legally obtained North American ROM file of Pokémon Platinum, adapting the game and providing you with a brand-new experience. An experience that will be one of the hardest things you've ever encountered.

Platinum Kaizo puts you into the heart of the action straight away. According to the FAQs linked to the ROM file, you'll be picking your starter Pokémon after 60 seconds and straight into your first battle after 90. You'll get Rare Candies in your bag from the start to give certain team members a winning edge, and you can also 'edge' Pokémon to one EXP point below levelling up by interacting with gym signposts.

As I mentioned in the title, Platinum Kaizo is designed to punish gamers who aren't fully investing their brain power into the game. There are trainers that don't need to be defeated in order to progress but who will make your life a living hell if you try to take them down. You need to be on your guard and think while playing to avoid as much pain as possible. There are multiple paths to pick with items you'll miss if you traverse one or the other, and the chance of getting a Master Rank by defeating the super tough 50+ Contest Trainers in the game.

Depending on which starter you pick, you'll automatically have access to different HMs that will allow you to explore certain areas more quickly. Essentially, picking Piplup means you can use Waterfall with Empoleon much quicker than if you picked up a Piplup in the wild and found the HM. The same goes for Cut and Rock Smash with Turtwig and Chimchar respectively.

As this is a Kaizo hack, there are level caps in place for the Gyms for that hardcore Nuxlocke experience. If your Pokémon are above the levels shown below, then the gym leaders will refuse to battle you, and you'll have to come back with new team members to try and win with:

  • Roark: 16
  • Gardenia: 28
  • Fantina: 38
  • Barry #3: 42
  • Maylene: 47
  • Wake: 54
  • Barry #5: 63
  • Byron: 65
  • Candice: 74
  • Volkner: 84
  • Elite Four / Mt. Coronet: 100

Those wishing to enter the Platinum Kaizo Hall of Fame will need to make sure they follow strict Nuzlocke rules and video their playthrough so that SHF can see there's been no cheating going on.

There are lots of official forms and informative documents to help you on the Diamond Kaizo Discord channel if you need a reminder while playing, as well as a damage calculator and PlatKaizoHeX to help you to analyse every element of your gameplay.

If you're ready to join the masses playing this ROM hack (my Discord has been going wild while writing this article) and make your week a whole lot tougher and have some sleepless nights from the stress in the process, then pick your starter and get battling. You've got nothing to lose (other than what hair you have left and your sanity).
