How many of you have heard of Pokémon Creepypasta? I'm pretty new to the term, but I've spent a lot of time reading through some pretty strange and wonderful stories this past weekend, burrowing down a rabbit hole and getting lost in a world of Pokémon horror stories.

Curse of the Unown King is one of these stories, written by an anonymous Pokémon fan who, after staying at home on Christmas Eve with a fever, heard a knock at the door and found a strange package on their doorstep with a Pokémon Silver cartridge and some specific instructions inside.

The instructions inside the box seemed to follow a pattern that matched the writer's current hour of gaming, with tasks taking place in real time. It meant that everything led to a 3 am showdown with the Unown King, after 666 hours of gameplay.

'The Unown King had killed every person and Pokémon in the game, hence what his Pokédex page said.'

I've had a fever before, and I thought I was in a coal mine. I sat scraping coal off the walls of my living room with my hands so that I could keep me and my parents warm. I know what kinds of strange things you can hallucinate when you're ill, so whether or not this was a figment of the writer's imagination or not remains to be seen. Still, ROM hacker Oxygen has brought the horror story to life in a hack of Pokémon Crystal.

Oxygen has brought this creepy story to life in an actual game, faithfully recreating the tale with some new optional bonus content. They've also hinted that they might add some new content in time too, perhaps giving you the option to play through some other creepypasta scripts or even getting some more insight from the original creator of the narrative, who might very well be hiding behind their sofa playing the game of their own terrible fever dream.
