Nintendo 3DS Game Finally Cancelled After Being On Pre-order For Almost a Decade

mighty no 9 gameplay cancelled 3ds game

I’ve had my fair share of waiting for games to become available and having pre-orders teased continually by websites. Can you remember when Amazon kept changing the goalposts for Metroid Prime 4? I can, and I’m still annoyed about it to this day. Still, I bet the people who waited almost a decade for their pre-orders of a certain Nintendo 3DS game were incredibly annoyed when they were finally notified they had been cancelled.

A game called Mighty No. 9 came out in 2016 for the major platforms of the time after a successful Kickstarter campaign. It served as a sort of follow-up to the Mega Man series, a spiritual successor if you will to fill the gap the blue wonder had left in the absence of any official offerings from Capcom. It released on PS3 and PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Mac, Linux, Windows, & Wii U, and was subsequently ridiculed into the gutter by both players and game critics.

It’s weird that a game can be made after initially being backed by fans and then absolutely slated by those same fans, but I guess the world works in mysterious ways. It’s the reason why the extra goals of a 3DS version and a PS Vita port ultimately never happened even though people received pre-order notifications telling them that the game would come. After the terrible reception Mighty No. 9 received, however, it’s no surprise that developers Comcept tried to put the debacle behind them and move on to better things, but why leave it so long to cancel the pre-orders?

Like me searching for news on Metroid Prime 4, X user @LonelyGoomba has been keeping tabs on the game’s progress on Amazon, notifying the game’s followers, aka ‘MightyHeads’, who were hoping that the game would still be coming to the platform despite the 3DS being discontinued back in 2020. I think in all honesty after a couple of years of waiting I would have given up hope and asked for my money back, but it’s admirable that LonelyGoomba held a torch for Mighty No. 9 for so long. We’re sorry to be the bearers of bad news for anyone who hasn’t had a cancellation notice yet, but at least the wait is finally over and fans can put it to bed once and for all. Copies of Mighty No. 9 are still available to buy for the consoles I mentioned above if you do want to check it out, but for handheld fans, the journey, unfortunately, ends here.
