Experience the ultimate historical compilation of Mortal Kombat games in a new release from Digital Eclipse and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

If you're a regular Retro Dodo reader, then you'll already know about the incredible work that Digital Eclipse does with their edutainment titles and preserving retro gaming history. You might have experienced the level of detail they go into with titles like Atari 50 and The Making Of Karateka, and now they've teamed up with Warner Bros. to bring 'klassic' (everything's K when Mortal Kombat is concerned) games from the series to modern consoles.

The collection, dropping on all major consoles including the Switch 2 and Steam, will feature 8 games from 1992 to 2003, three of which I played so much I could pull off the moves with my eyes closed.

  • Mortal Kombat – 1992 (Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear)
  • Mortal Kombat II – 1993 (Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, 32X)
  • Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995 (Arcade, SNES, Genesis)
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995 (Arcade, SNES)
  • Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997 (Arcade)
  • Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001 (GBA)
  • Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002 (GBA)
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003 (GBA)

Obviously, I couldn't play with my friends from different towns online with the SNES, as the technology just wasn't there. The Legacy Kollection will have online support, however, so I can finally try and beat my mate Andy after 25 years. The Kollection will also feature the key elements of the history of the series, concept art, exclusive video interviews, vintage footage, and more. There will also be references to Elder Gods, Outworld, Edenia, and Earthrealm throughout the arcade era too - they weren't wrong when they said it was the ultimate collection!

Speaking on the new release, Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse, said 'Mortal Kombat irrevocably altered the cultural landscape of video games. It was audacious, shocking, and unflinching. It marked a seismic shift in interactive entertainment, pulling the industry into a more provocative, mature direction that continues to influence game design and cultural discourse over three decades later. With Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, we set out not just to preserve its legacy, but to contextualize it – inviting players to experience its origins, trace its evolution, and appreciate the bold vision that transformed it into a global icon. For us, this project is both tribute and testament.'
