I’ve loved Ocarina of Time ever since the first moment I read about it in Nintendo Official Magazine. It evolved a passion for video games that I had first discovered with my Uncle as a child and opened my mind up to fantasy, adventure, and the world of Nintendo. In many ways, it’s the game that led to me writing these words today, and I love the fact that people are still coming up with amazing ways to make this game surprise me after almost three decades.
Many of you will have already seen the article I wrote on notCHase’s Ocarina of Time modding concepts back in March, adding Falcon Punch, UltraHand, and other amazing abilities into the classic game. Well, there’s now another clip combining another epic Nintendo series into the Hero of Time’s adventure, and it’s made me want to go back and play Ocarina of Time for the 100th (probably) time again.
Pikmin & Ocarina of Time – it’s a match made in heaven (thanks Gaming Reinvented for discovering this). Link running around Hyrule Field, delving into Kakariko Village, and battling enemies in all of the temples and dungeons with little Pikmin by his side; the whole thing makes for a genius crossover The mechanics are exactly the same as in the Pikmin games; Link can throw Pikmin to attack enemies and move objects, and it complements the puzzle-gameplay nature of Ocarina of Time so well by using Pikmin up to collect heart pieces or utilising the, to move rocks and much more.
notCHase has gone one step further, however, and allowed Pikmin to fix and break things too. Check out the clip above to watch Link’s Pikmin fixing the bridge to Gerudo Valley and also breaking the Hyrule Castle Bridge. It’s amazing work and adds a whole new dynamic to one of my favourite games. The Pikmin die when enemies fall on them or attack them too, and all of the elemental factors from the Pikmin games come into play too. Red Pikmin will survive well in Death Mountain but perish when you swim through Lake Hylia, and Blue Pikmin experience the opposite.
Seeing Pikmin moving rocks (and characters), throwing bombs, and collecting Rupees weirdly doesn’t look out of place! Unfortunately, looking at is all you’ll be able to do for the time being as it’s just a video clip of what could be possible. Hopefully, notCHase will figure out a way of making this playable in the near future so that I can get stuck in and have a go myself!
