It seems wrong that the N64 was the only console to not have a bona fide Metroid game. I mean sure, Samus appeared as one of the first characters in Super Smash Bros. back on the N64, but she didn't appear in a game on the platform, jumping from the SNES to the GameCube and skipping out Nintendo's 64-bit marvel altogether.
That wrong is being righted by developer and Metroid fan Luto Akino, who is putting in a lot of time and effort into creating the N64 Metroid game we always wanted... nay, deserved.
Sigh... Good news and bad news, shooting while holding onto a ledge is totally possible and feels great, Unfortunately for me, it will require a lot of work 🤦🏻🙄 This is going to take a long time ... In the latest post on his X page, Luto describes the lengthy process of actually creating such a mammoth game, with ledge shooting mechanics finally working well after some brain-scratching moments. But the nature of such a big task is also becoming apparent, meaning that it unfortunately and unsurprisingly won't be finished any time soon.

Still, Luto's feed shows an incredibly interesting journey in character creation and game development. And the scenarios that are available to view look perfect, just as I would have imagined an N64 Metroid game to look like. The rock textures, Samus' suit, the Lylat Wars-esque laser beams - it's like a game that I found from a time capsule that never made it to shop shelves!
What do you think of this project? Does it stay true to the spirit of the N64? Would you prefer this to Metroid Prime 4 (if that ever releases too)? Let us know in the comments below!
