Luigi is used to scary situations having cleared out three mansions of ghosts. He’s had his fair share of spooky situations, but his nerves are about to be put to the test in a new fan-made horror game. I thought the scene with the Dry Bones in the Super Mario Bros. Movie were a little scary, but that toad on the featured image of this article makes them look like cuddly toys!
Crucis Mortem is a new horror offering from WhiteVoid. Based on Super Mario Bros 2 for the NES, it puts Luigi into a world of fear. According to the official description on the itch.io page, ‘Your mind is now trapped on your computer screen, the horrors you once committed will now be payed’. Honestly, that sounds terrifying, and I’m not sure what the previous horrors I’ve committed could be… am I going to be mowed down by skeletal Goombas… does a Goomba even have a skeleton?
The game is currently only available to play on Windows and is playable as a 30-minute demo. It’s very much a work in process with a projected release date of 321 days time. 321 seems a bit of a vague number (especially because it’s just descending numbers), so hopefully we’ll see it before then.
This isn’t the only terrifying news I’ve covered here at Retro Dodo this week; I also wrote about the utterly soul-crunching animatronic Kazooie puppet that has appeared online again after a collector purchased it. Appearing briefly in a Banjo-Kazooie advert in the US, it’s one of those puppets that looks as though it could steal your dreams; playing Crucis Mortem with that behind you would really give you the willies!
