LEGO have been getting into the gaming scene in a big way of late, not least with their collaborations with Nintendo on the Mario & Zelda series of games and the LEGO Game Boy. They're no strangers to Sonic and the gang either, and I've been wanting to see some more LEGO SEGA merchandise for a while now.
Well, it looks like I'm getting my wish this September. LEGO creator
itavix_bricks has posted up a Lego Insiders image on their Instagram feed of the finished box for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Controller that we've been hearing whispers of for a couple of days now.
And yes, it does have a secret hidden inside of it.
The product is expected to launch on September 8th, be 15 x 10 cm in size, and cost around €130. That's around £112 or $152. It is set to come with a stand and stickers for you to put Genesis or SEGA branding on it, and has a panel that you can open to reveal a scene from the iconic Sonic level Green Hill Zone on the inside. It even has a LEGO product number assigned to it, '40769', making this a pretty convincing rumour.
This comes hot on the heels of Console Heroes SEGA cartridge Mighty Max-style Dioramas that we've been getting excited about here at Retro Dodo. It's mad to think that even though we're in 2025, almost 4 decades after the creation of the Genesis/Mega Drive in Japan, it's still one of the most prevalent consoles of our time and has left such a mark on gamers.
The Mega Drive controller was always such an iconic shape, and I can't wait to get my hands on one of these to display in the office. Let's just hope a LEGO Mega Drive follows pretty quickly after this new set!
