While most people wake up and scroll through Instagram or Facebook, I’ve taken to trawling through Kickstarter and looking at the amazing inventions people have been coming up with in the retro space. My latest hyperfixation is with Inku, a retro-inspired Paper display that looks like it came straight from Professor Oak’s lab!
The best way that I can describe the Inku calendar is like a Kindle for your everyday life. It uses an ePaper display that utilises physical ink particles to create the images on the screen, just like the screensavers on your Kindle, which if anything adds to the whole Pokémon-esque theme for me… like the Inku is evolving every time the screen changes.
The idea behind the device is that it links with your calendar apps and becomes a personal organiser for all of your day-to-day activities, and the retro design and colour schemes really appeal to us. Everything from the avatars to the text and buttons looks like using a Game Boy to plan your life, which is something that we could definitely get on board with. And unlike a phone, the Inku doesn’t ‘whine or chime’ at you; it’s there in the background to be helpful as and when you need it, which sounds like the kind of device I could fully get on board with.
Impressively, the Inku met its Kickstarter goal within 6 minutes of going live, which is an incredible feat! While the device comes with avatar settings already inside, if the campaign goes from just under $196K to $275K in the next 10 days, then an ‘upload your own avatar’ function will come with every unit. If that happens, I’m definitely getting one and finding a way to get Prof. Oak in there; who better to tell me that I’ve got a podcast recording or to display a beautiful view of a forest for me to calm down with? Just so long as it’s not Viridian Forest… I’m sick of those Kakunas!
There’s currently 25% off the Inku calendar range if you order now, with prices starting at $149/£114 for the 4″ screen and $185/£141 for the larger 7.3″ screen. Head to the official Kickstarter campaign page for more information!
