Of all the people that you thought you might see at Gamescom this year, I bet Hyundai weren't on your list. Yes, it seems that electric vehicles and retro gaming are combining in the form of the Hyundai Insteroid, with a retro game available to play in the form of 'Insteroid Retro Arcade'

If you follow your electric vehicles, then you'll know that the Insteroid was supposed to be a virtual concept only, but anyone visiting Gamescom 2025 can go and actually see this car in the flesh. Not only that, but there are competitions where winners can get their likeness made into in-game characters too. Talk about being immortalised in gaming history, huh!

Hyundai claims that the game that features their electric vehicle is based on classic maze games, and I feel like you can also see a bit of that in the car's design from the angular wheel trims too. There are two stages where players first collect electricity to evolve the car into its final form, and a stage where players need to trap a boss within a maze.

The Insteroid game and car can be found in the Retro & Family area of the Gamescom event - if nothing else, it's worth you going to check out the first time a carmaker has been present at the event. 'I was there, son, all the way back in 2025, when Hyundai came to Gamescom.' I'd dine out on that story for decades!
