I've seen some sacrilegious things in my time working here at Retro Dodo, but seeing Super Mario 64 running on a PS2 could be the one that feels the most wrong. Still, having the classic N64 title playing on both an N64 and a PS2 in online co-op multiplayer, well that's something I can definitely get on board with.
If you've heard of Carl Does Tech Things, then you'll know that his YouTube channel is full of amazing inventions backed up by wacky videos. I love watching his stuff, and now with some tech wizardry and the help of a Raspberry Pi Pico, he's managed to create a true online experience between two consoles that have been at loggerheads for years now.
This little bit of retro gaming splicing actually uses the PS2 decomp of SM64, and the results are fantastic. Carl's video shows the troubles he's faced getting two versions of Mario to animate seperately, carrying over existing movesets, and how he managed to create a server for an online gaming multiplayer experience the likes of which we've never seen before.
