While the world has been waiting and feeling dejected about the ever-changing goalposts around the Analogue 3D, ModRetro have been working hard on their own answer to the next evolution of the N64. It's no secret that we're big fans of what ModRetro have done with the Chromatic and their mission to create the ultimate Game Boy, and unlike Analogue, they've filled me with confidence since day 1 of the M64 marketing campaign.
It's only been 8 months since the idea of the device was teased in a tweet and 4 months since pricing was announced. Now, we're getting a full first look at the design of the M64 and the available colourways this Friday in a special Black Friday extravaganza, and that's not all.

One of the things that I'm impressed with the most is that we've actually seen gameplay footage of GoldenEye on the M64, and it looks unreal! Check out the video below!
The ModRetro M64 hardware is getting a full reveal on Black Friday - features, colors, our incredible new controller, cutting-edge @AMD hardware, etc.

Much has changed since we launched early bird pricing at $199 earlier this year, things like inflation, component shortages,… pic.twitter.com/T8MLilyweh
Palmer Luckey and the ModRetro team have been very transparent about the whole process of building the M64 (just like the cool new shells in the pictures shown in this article). That fact, alongside the fact that I'm actually seeing sneaky shots of the console and colours ahead of the big reveal this Friday, is what's filling me with such confidence.

Palmer said in a recent post on X that a lot has happened with the build of the console with tarrifs and inflation coming into effect, and that despite the challenges of creating a super efficient FPGA console, ModRetro have succeeded and managed to keep the original stated $199 price for all customers no matter when they buy!
And yes, they're planning on shipping it with a controller that you don't have to buy as an add-on!
Keep an eye out right here on Retro Dodo this Friday for more information and to see a full overview of the new console design and colours - not long to wait now!
