Anyone with a smartphone will undoubtedly know about Clash Royale. Even if you're normally focused on retro gaming and sometimes like to dabble in mobile games, you'll probably have whiled away many an hour on this game while travelling or kicking back on the sofa. It's addictive, I'll give it that, but it wasn't ever something I would have wanted to talk about on Retro Dodo... until now.
Discover what Clash Royale might have looked like if it released back in 1998 instead of 2016. This retro demake from developer Pixel gives the game that same pixelated, low-poly look that we know and love from the PS1's heyday and acts as a tribute to both Supercell's fantastic creation and Sony's home console masterpiece.

For those of you who are bona fide Clash Royale experts, you'll find that the battles, characters, and the speed of the matches from the original game are very much present in this demake. It can be played by two players on the same keyboard too, with player one using WASD and Shift, and Player 2 using the Arrow buttons and Enter. The maps are well designed, and the game takes me straight back to playing the likes of Worms back in 1995.

The characters all work as PS1 characters too. The Blue King and Red King in charge of their armies of their Barbarians, Knights, and Archers could have jumped straight from a Spyro title and could even be reused for a demake of the Xbox Burger King game Sneak King.
I've been a fan of Pixel's work for a while now after checking out their Fortnite and Fall Guys PS1 demakes almost a year ago as I write this article. Clash Royale for the PS1 looks just as well-made and thought-out as their previous demakes, and you can download it for Windows devices now. Just head to the Pixel Itch.io page for more information!
