EA has shut down the online servers for five classic titles on their roster, leaving large parts of those games dead forever.

The games effected are Battlefield 1943 (PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360), Battlefield Bad Company (PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360), Battlefield Bad Company 2 (PC / PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360), Dante’s Inferno (PlayStation 3 / PlayStation Portable / Xbox 360), and Dead Space 2 (PC, PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360).

Admittedly, all of these games are over ten years old now and on previous generation consoles. So it is understandable that EA would like to start reducing their roster to allow more service dedicated to recent titles.

But surely there are still plenty of fans of every single one of these games. And there would be a lot of people still interested in playing these games in 2024.

The closure of the online servers for these titles means that a portion of game content for some of the best PS3 FPS games is completely lost. Especially for games like Battlefield that have a strong emphases on the online multiplayer side of things.

A Setback For Hardcore Fans

You could say “yeah, but why don’t you just play a newer game?!”, and your logic wouldn’t be entirely flawed.

But imagine if one of these games happened to be one of your favorite nostalgic experiences. Imagine if you still played one of these games with friends to relive the feeling it gave you ten plus years ago.

To think that this sentimental experience can just be taken away from somebody at any moment is a bummer, no matter how you look at it.

We understand that business is business and somebody has to maintain and pay for those servers. EA obviously has other plans for that space; like any one of the hundreds of other games under their care that make use of those servers.

But again, we can understand how this is a major to a select few who have a special connection to those particular game titles.

So if you’re one of the players effected by the recent server shutdown, we salute you.
