Donkey Kong DX Brings The Classic Game To Your Game Boy Color In 2025

A still of Donkey Kong DX for the GBC

No, we couldn’t believe our eyes either! Donkey Kong is returning to handhelds in 2025 in glorious colour 31 years after its original 1994 Game Boy release in the form of Donkey Kong DX. As a die-hard Donkey Kong fan, I’m incredibly excited about the first trailer to come from the team behind it, a trailer I’ve watched about 8 times already!

This fan-made remaster is set to drop in 2025 and comes from a small team of gamers who have been working tirelessly to breathe new life into Nitnendo’s iconic Game Boy game. In a post on Twitter, Marc_max writes that he, kensuyjin33, and Jorge2D have spent possibly thousands of hours getting this remaster ready for eager gamers everywhere, and their hard work certainly looks like it’s paid off.

And the best thing is that Donkey Kong DX will be available to play with real GBC hardware, so whether you’ve got your original Game Boy Color from when you were a child, a modded one, or a device like the Analogue Pocket, then you can play this on the real deal as opposed to using emulators. That’s the stuff dreams are made of right there!

Just take a look at this trailer; the game has been given a whole new lease of life, with vibrant colours that look as though they’re popping out of the screen. With the new colour scheme, the game looks so much like the Mario vs Donkey Kong games for the GBA too!

We don’t have any specific dates as to when the game will drop, only that it’s coming in 2025. I’ve reached out to Marc-max for some more details, so I’ll update you all as and when they arrive. The team behind the remaster are in no way affiliated with Nintendo, however, and they’ve made it very clear in the trailer that they are not endorsed by Ninty nor intend to create any copyright infringement through the remaster. Time will tell whether Nintendo feels the same way, and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on a copy to have a play!
