Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos Remastered Announced As Argonaut Games Returns After 20-Year Hiatus

Talk about a title that takes your breath away! We’re incredibly excited to announce that one of our favourite PS1 characters from one of our all-time favourite games is returning to our lives from the original studio which created it! Argonaut Games has confirmed today that the legendary studio first created by Jez San OBE is coming back after being gone for two decades, and that their first port of call is to bring Croc: Legend of the Gobbos back, fully remastered!

For those of you who haven’t heard about Argonaut Games, let me give you a little history lesson. They’re legends in the gaming world and put their names behind some of the most exciting titles and series that have been prevalent ever since the 1980s. We’re talking Starglider 1 & 2 and Star Fox to name a few… these are the guys that helped bring Fox McLoud to the world! They’re pioneers of 3D gaming and paved the way for developers to create many of the titles we enjoy today.

The fact that they’re bringing back Croc: Legend of the Gobbos as their first port of call is music to our ears. We love the little green marvel here at Retro Dodo Towers; Legend of the Gobbos was such an exciting game and one of the first 3D platformers on a non-Nintendo console back in 1997. Heck, as Argonaut said in their email to us, Croc might have been more famous than Yoshi if things had gone differently! Along with Spyro who dropped the year after in 1998, Croc was a strong part of Sony’s answer to Nintendo’s cutesy platformers – maybe we could have been playing Croc Party instead of Mario Party, and maybe we still might!

Croc sold over 3 million copies back in the day. I know so many people who will jump at the chance to own a remastered version of Legend of the Gobbos, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it brought as much attention and excitement as Crash’s N.Sane Trilogy and Spyro’s Reignited Trilogy! According to Argonaut Games, the remaster promises ‘to bring the beloved game to a new generation of gamers with enhanced HD graphics, updated modern control mechanics, and a nostalgic, fun, and authentic gameplay experience that will be sure to ignite the imagination of players and remind them why they fell in love with video games in the first place.’

Jez San OBE founded the company back in 1982 when it was originally called Argonaut Software. Speaking on the company’s return and the return of Croc, Jez said ‘Argonaut was always about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in gaming, and I’m excited to see how the relaunched Argonaut Games builds on that legacy, starting with the Croc Legend of the Gobbos remaster.’

Still, not everyone is happy that Croc is heading back into their lives, or at least not for the same reasons as the Dodo team.

Remember Baron Dante? Well, Argonaut Games managed to track him down and get this message from him. ‘Twenty-seven long years ago, that little green crocodile thwarted my plan to usurp King Rufus and imprison the Gobbos. Thanks to Argonaut Games, I have been given a do-over, and this time I shall prevail!

Talk about keeping a grudge, huh? As always, we’ll be keeping you up to date with all the news on the Croc remaster as it drops, and you can head to the Argonaut Games website for more information in the meantime. Here are a few more screenshots to get you excited too – this game is going to be incredible!
