A collaboration I was not expecting to see today is one between the retro gaming company Commodore and CD Projekt Red's very own Cyberpunk 77 video game that was released back in 2020! Though looking at the images, it's the perfect blend of retro future vibes that will make any 80s gamer's knees shake a little.
For those new to the Commodore 64, it was one of the most popular video game consoles of the 80s; it took gaming to the next level with graphical enhancements and thousands of games to choose from and an enticing price tag that made many pull the trigger. It's still recognised today as one of the greatest consoles ever made, respectfully earned.
Many are still attracted to it today, not only for the 10,000+ great games but for the fact you can code on it, create music, and generate software on it. This modern Commodore 64 has all of that with some much-welcomed quality-of-life improvements that you'd expect in a console launched in 2026, such as HDMI output, WiFi, USB input, authentic FPGA output and more.
In Commodore's words: "it's made for those who refuse to hand every file and function to the corps, it delivers authentic FPGA-powered computing without corporate control, endless feeds, or algorithmic distractions. Just the freedom to write, code, play, and create on your own terms – all at up to 77MHz processing speed".
The Commodore 77 collectable special edition includes:
- ‘Shard’ cartridge holding an exclusive 8-Bit ‘demo’ Cyberpunk experience, from Commodore x Arise Designs, with 24-channel stereo SID music by LukHash

What's interesting is that there's a 2MB game called "The Shard" which is bundled with this Commodore 77, which is designed to somewhat "demo" what Cyberpunk 77 would look like on a console like this; think of it more like an audiovisual experience, rather than a game. It's being produced by Arise, which has created a number of demos and experiences for the Commodore 64 in the past, alongside a collaboration with LukHash on the soundtrack.
This Commodore 77 console is now available to pre-order on Commodore's official website; the console will retail for $377/£276, and shipping will begin in batches starting in February 2027.
