If you thought today was an exciting day for the future of the N64 with the announcement of more new and unreleased games coming to our collections via ModRetro, then things are just getting started.

Viewpoint 2064 was supposed to come out for my favourite console back in 1999, a 3D sequel to the 1992 title Viewpoint from Aicom and Sammy for the NeoGeo. The N64 sequel was supposed to be incredible, expanding on the battles and soundtrack of the original in a way only the N64 could. Think LylatWars meets Space Harrier and Galaga, and you're on the right track.

However, just like some of the other great titles that should have headed to the N64 such as Quest 2 and Dinosaur Planet, it never ended up being released. Sammy fell foul of developmental issues, and like so many other great ideas, it fell into the void and was seemingly forgotten, with the project ending two years later.

We've seen glimpses of hope for Viewpoint 64 over the years. A prototype cartridge appeared on eBay, the home of all lost and rare goods when it comes to retro gaming, back in 2015. Then, back in 2020, a group of dedicated video game preservationists, of which YouTuber Hard4Games was a part of, made a discovery that was as exciting for retro gamers as archaeologists finding a full Diplodocus skeleton - a copy of the game itself.

As mentioned by Time Extension, this partially complete version was ported online by GamingAlexandria, and while a win for gaming preservation in the sense that we could see the game and play the majority of it, it wasn't the fully finished article we'd all been hoping for.

Viewpoint 2064 seems to have a five-year luck cycle, because 5 years later in 2025, another version referred to by Hard4Games as the 'master version' has appeared and been uploaded online. Hard4Games, who has both discovered the new finished and finalised version of the game and uploaded a video of the differences between the 2020 discovery and the 2025 version, is understandably incredibly excited to be able to share this discovery with the world. Another N64 game saved from obscurity - it's a beautiful day indeed!

The full dump of the finished version of Racdym's unreleased Viewpoint 2064 is available to download from Internet Archive, but if you've got a spare 10 minutes, I urge you to show Hard4Games some love and check out the comparison between the two dumps and carts in the video below!
