If you’re a fan of the iconic Gundam world and the multiple series that delve into this fantastic universe, then this list is going to feel like the holy grail.
If you’ve never heard of Gundam before this, however, then what follows might be like walking blindly into an algebra storm armed only with a blunt pencil.
Still, I’m going to do my very best to guide you through these incredible games and the best titles that I love from this amazing franchise.
Expect massive mobile suits, impressive firepower, and some of the best battles you’ve ever experienced in your entire lives.

10. Gundam Side Story 0079: Rise from the Ashes (1999)
Gundam Side Story 0079: Rise from the Ashes kickstarts out list of the best Gundam games ever made, a Dreamcast classic with one of the coolest covers of any game…
… I’m probably going to say that a lot through this article.
This game sits in the period of time between the brutal year-long war with Zeon and the Earth Federation.
Players must take Lt. Rayer and his brave team in nine missions through Australia as part of the White Dingo guerrilla combat unit.
All the missions are played from Lt Rayer’s point of view inside the cockpit of his mech warrior. Give orders, smash enemy robots, and destroy targets throughout the land.
And one thing we need to touch on before I talk about all the games below too – these mobile suits have some serious firepower. We’re talking mega projectiles, lasers; the works.
From tanks to Gundams, there are tonnes of cretins to squash under your might. You can even enter sniping mode to get targets that are far off.
How cool are these Gundam games!!
9. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Battle Assault (2004)
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Battle Assault doesn’t even win the accolade of longest title in this game either, not even second longest. Bandai sure know how to pack a lot of info into their game names!
It’s time for some portable mobile suit action on the GBA folks. Once unlocked, there are eight armoured units from the Alliance and ZAFT factions to control.
Gameplay comes from the Bloody Valentine War, which I think has something to do with those Welsh guys that sang ‘My Tears Dont Fall’, but I’m not 100% sure.
Your chosen Gundam can perform long range and close attacks. Thrust towards an opponent or hover in the air to avoid an enemy strike.
Play through multiple modes including 2 player multiplayer, story mode, survival, and more.
Oh, and try to keep your cool when your Gundam enters berserk mode; it’s something truly spectacular to behold.
8. Gundam Assault Survive (2010)
Up next on our best Gundam games compendium is Gundam Assault Survive, another portable adventure this time on the PSP.
It’s a dog eat dog world in this sequel to Gundam: The Battle Master. Players take Heero Yuy on a mission to dispose of all the mobile suits under enemy control.
With his Wing Gundam, he must stop the whispers of war and thwart the enemy before things start getting out of hand… which is easier said than done in the Gundam universe!
As with the other games, firepower makes up a key element to the game. Ammo can run out, however, so don’t just run in willy-nilly and blast everything in sight.
The game itself is set with a view behind Heero’s Gundam which I like, and the PSP graphics still look tasty even when we play today.
Pull off super attacks, whip out a beam shield and make sure you’re the one with more health bars at the end of each fight.
You can even have a bash at a multiplayer mode with a mate to see who has the best Gundam skills.
7. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam (2007)
Who remembers the first time they played Dynasty Warriors: Gundam?
This game more follows the formula of the Dynasty Warriors games rather than the Gundam titles and employs a heavy hack and slash vibe ala Hyrule Warriors.
Yes, if you replace the army generals from the original series with Gundam mobile suits, laser swords, and blasters, them you get the general gist!
If you’re a massive fan of games like Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, then Dynasty Warriors: Gundam will make you feel like all your robotic Christmases and birthdays have come early.
Play third person as you move your mobile suit directly; no commands or anything to give here, just destroying everything in your path.
Hover, fly, change suits, and immerse yourself in all the mystery, wonder, and delight of the world of Gundam.
6. SD Gundam G Generation Wars (2009)
SD Gundam G Generation Wars probably has the most ‘Gs’ in any game ever made (actually it ties with Number 4…).
For fans of Fire Emblem and other tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics, this game will feel like a walk in the park…
… albeit a dangerous park with loads of killer mobile suits and explosions.
Viewed from a 2.5D perspective, players can take a total of 700 mobile suits and units from the entire Gundam universe through 50 battles.
It’s basically a tactical brawl, with players swapping Gundams in and out like a Pokemon team to complete chosen quests.
Upgrade your mecha fighters and even create your own. The possibilities are endless and the gameplay never gets boring!
5. Gundam: True Odyssey (2005)
Gundam: True Odyssey takes the 5th spot in this list of the best Gundam games of all time!
Ok, so Western gamers will know this as MS Saga: A New Dawn, but I went with the Japanese title as it has Gundam in it.
Plus, it just sounds cooler!
The game follows the events of the Great Fall. People are rebuilding their lives after the G Machine nearly destroyed half the universe.
As if things couldn’t get worse, a rogue mobile suit blows up an orphanage!
Queue the two orphans that are going to save the world and stop the mobile suit responsible.
Take Tristan and Fritz through a Gundamlicious RPG, leading a team of fighters as you explore exciting towns and battle mecha warriors in turn-based battles across the world.
The combination of FF style exploring mixed with typical Gundam fighting is so addictive that you’ll find it almost impossible to put down. It’s the perfect PS2 game for relaxing down with on a Sunday afternoon and a credit to our best Gundam games list!
4. Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam Next (2009)
I’m going to be honest, I’m probably not going to write Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs Gundam Next again in this section; it’s too damn long!
As you might guess, this is the sequel to the previous MSG:GVG game (the ‘next’ in the title kind of gives it away).
In many ways, it’s a very similar game with some key new features like the Next Dash which instantly cancels out any moves and allows players to boost. The G-Crossover has been ditched too, but many of the same features and units from the first game are back.
Oh, and you’ll have to keep your reflexes sharp as automatic blocking is no longer a feature.
With cool music, multiple playable routes, a mission mode, and some of the greatest battles of all time, this is one PSP game you absolutely need in your life.
3. Shin Kidō Senki Gundam W: Endless Duel (1996)
Shin Kidō Senki Gundam W: Endless Duel is the oldest game in our list of the best Gundam games by a long way.
Dropping in ’96 for the SNES, this Street Fighter-style fighting game is like a pixelated version of Pacific Rim…
… and I’ve just annoyed all the Gundam Fans out there instantly with that comparison.
I’m only trying to help people who have no idea what Gundam is to understand the concept, so don’t hate me!
Players have three different modes to choose from – Trial, Vs, or the official Story mode.
While the multiplayer mode is amazing for fighting against friends and proving who is the strongest mobile suit pilot, it’s the Story Mode where this game shines.
Like Killer Instinct and other fighting games, players chose a Gundam and work their way through a tournament until they get to the final boss, defeating opponents at every stage.
And, if you want to practice your skills, just step into the Trial mode and take part in a never-ending stream of battles while you improve your moves.
Ok, they end when you die, but they keep going as long as you stay intact!
2. Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. (2005)
Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. takes the silver medal in our best Gundam games compendium!
Based on the Seed branch of the Gundam series, this title sees players controlling mobile suits in a third-person perspective as they represent one of three fighting groups.
I guess if you’ve never watched the series than you won’t have any preconceived allegiances… but then why would you be looking at these games if you’ve never watched the series?
Get off the fence and pick a side already!
Play through the Arcade and Free modes with your favourite pilots and suits. There are nine stages in the main mode that require you to fight like a demon; destroy or be destroyed.
The Free battle is a multiplayer mode where you and a mate can either battle each other to the death or team up to take down brutal opponents.
If you grab the PSP version, you can also take advantage of a 4-player mode, doubling the crazy action on the go!
1. Gundam Breaker 3 (2016)
Gundam Breaker 3 is the best Gundam game of all time and a worthy winner of our list!
There are so many Gundam games to chose from that everyone’s favourite will probably be different.
Still, for me, GB3 has everything that I love about this series.
Ok, so it’s essentially a beefed up version of GB2, but is that really a bad thing? That game was a classic too!
Gundam Breaker 3 has some epically titled modes like Core Assault and Monolith Demolition too. Plus I defy anyone to tell me that the Team Deathmatch isn’t great to tackle with a mate.
Still, it’s the PS4’s graphics that make this game superb. Just look at that still above; it’s what every kid dreamt about seeing while wandering through woods and mountains.
With epic killing finisher moves, multiple difficulties, and some of the gnarliest-looking mobile suits out of all the games, GB3 deserves this top spot in our best Gundam games list.
