Table of Contents
Best Anime Games On Playstation 5
1. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4
Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4 is one of the absolute best anime fighting games of all time. It has topped a few of our lists, including the best anime games AND the best Naruto games.
So is it really any surprise that it has made it to the top of our list of the best anime games for PS5?
The game has not had official optimization for next gen consoles like most of the games on this list…
But in a game that is the epitome of GO GO GO… the Playstation 5 is probably the best way to experience “Ultimate Ninja Storm 4”.
Faster load times, 4k resolution and a stable framerate means you are unlikely to experience any hiccups. And that is exactly what you would hope for in the current ninth generation of gaming.
It is 2022.. the world has nearly torn itself apart, many of our lives were flipped upside down, back around, over again, and back again..
So when it comes to the latest generation of gaming hardware, where most of us find refuge from the real world, we hope for full immersion. And that means the fastest load times, no stutters, and nothing that takes us out of the experience.
A game like “Ultimate Ninja Storm 4” is a perfect example of how a masterfully crafted gaming experience is made that much better through the power of the Playstation 5.
And for that reason, we are giving “Ultimate Ninja Storm 4” the number one spot on our list of the best anime games on PS5.
2. Guilty Gear Strive
Guilty Gear Strive is one of the most exciting and visually impressive anime fighting games we have ever seen.
The game scored extremely high on our list of the best anime fighting games of all time, and I honestly have thought about going back and changing its position on the list.
It’s that good.
The 2d animation is masterfully crafted. The story is engaging and very deep.
And really.. it’s just fun, too.
It’s tough always coming in second place, but come on… there is a good reason this game just keeps making high appearances on our lists. It is an absolute must play game, especially for those with a PS5.
3. Persona 5 The Royal
Persona 5 The Royal is an enhanced version of Persona 5 released for the PS4 and PS5 consoles.
Persona 5 is a game you probably already know and love…
The wildly popular and unique RPG from Atlus (who brought us anime classics like Catherine and Shin Megami Tensei, and the upcoming Soul Hackers 2).
An eclectic mix of action, role-playing, and simulation… all in a wacky Japanese anime style package.
The game won a slew of awards, sold over 5 million copies, and is universally loved by fans.
“The Royal” version of the game features new characters, new story, new locations, new items, new music, and basically just a bunch of other stuff that would start with the word “new” that is sure to keep even the most experienced players busy for hours and hours.
Persona 5 The Royal is the definitive experience for Persona 5, and a must have on the Playstation 5 console.
An easy addition to our own wishlist, and to this list of the best anime games for PS5.
4. Tales of Arise
Tales of Arise is probably the most beautiful JRPG to come to the Playstation 5.
With its original launch date set in 2020, and ultimately being pushed back to September 2021… fans were foaming at the mouth to get their hands on it.
And once they did… it seemed like the wait was well worth it.
This game is stunning. Beautifully detailed environments, stylish characters, exciting battle effects, and those ever so satisfying stats all over the screen as you rack up those experience points.
Selling over 1.5 million units since its release and taking the crown as the Best RPG at The Game Awards 2021… there is no doubting the might of Tales of Arise.
And I, for one, absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this one for the PS5.
5. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Final Fantasy VII is one of the most beloved JRPG video games of all time.
It easily made an appearance on our list of the best selling PS1 games of all time.
When Square Enix announced a full modern remake, in the style of Final Fantasy XV, fans were ecstatic.
The 2020 release was a modern retelling of the first section of the original game, and was praised for being faithful to the original while introducing new mechanics.
Universally, the main complaint was that the episodic nature of the remake was just not enough to satisfy the hunger of the adoring fans.
But that did not stop over 5 million fans from picking it up for the Playstation 4.
Once the Playstation 5 was officially released, Square Enix delivered the enhanced version: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
This enhanced version introduced a new playable character, new storyline and many gameplay additions.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake is a game that you absolutely must experience. And the enhanced version for the Playstation 5 is the definitive experience.
Probably at the top of my todo list when I get a PS5!
Took the same spot on our list of the best JRPG games of all time as well!
6. Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact is a beautiful open world RPG originally released in 2020.
With ports for Windows, Android, iOS, PS4, PS5, and soon for the Nintendo Switch… there’s really no excuse to not have it already.
The game play is very immersive and there is just a LOT to do in this beautiful world.
And packed full of the quirky Japanese anime content we all love.
Oh, and did I mention it is 100% free to play?!
But as we all know by now, free doesn’t necessarily mean that a game can’t make some pretty impressive profits.
In the first year alone, Genshin Impact grossed over $3 billion dollars, making it the highest for any first year launch. EVER.
Anytime you start using the word “ever”, you likely have a hit on your hands. Genshin Impact is no exception.
A must play game, and why not.. it’s free! Unless you happen to be the type who ends up typing in your credit card number for that new armor… in which case, it could cost you ALOT.
Download at your own risk!
7. Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles
Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles… we know.. a mouthful. But don’t let that turn you away.
This 3d arena fighter game is a must-play for fans of anime, fighting games, and a combination of the two.. on Playstation 5.
Beautiful 2d cutscenes, competitive battles, quick-time events, open world areas, mini-games and massive boss fights. What more can one ask for?
This one feels like you are living right in the source anime, and it had me loading up my Netflix account to watch the show straight away.
So it was a must on our list of the best anime games on PS5.
8. Neo: The World Ends With You
Neo: The World Ends With You is a unique anime RPG, and is one that is best if you just experience it for yourself. You will not be disappointed!
It is the direct sequel to the 2007 game The World Ends with You, which we recently covered in our list of the best Nintendo DS Lite games.
“Neo” takes TWEWY into full 3d this time around.
So game play is a unique combination of third person fighting and visual novel that feels like an interactive manga.
The game is cool, exciting, and an absolute must have for anime fans (and especially those interested in the visual novel genre).
A fun one, and one I cannot wait to play when I finally get my hands on a PS5.
9. Scarlet Nexus
Scarlet Nexus is an action role-playing game for the Playstation 5 with a focus on “mental” combat.
Game play mechanics and the combat systems were both heavily praised by fans and reviewers.
And the game has been referred to as “brain punk” by developer Bandai Namco due to its focus on strategy and thinking outside of the box.
The theme of the game is actually based in harnessing and optimizing the power of the mind.
Scarlet Nexus even inspired a 2021 anime series, which received equally enthusiastic support from fans.
A unique gaming experience that should not be missed, and is especially impressive on the Playstation 5 hardware.
10. Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth
Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a masterfully crafted pixel art RPG based on the Record of Lodoss War novel series.
Many manga, anime and video game adaptations have been born from those imaginative works…
And one such video game is “Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth”
This was a particularly interesting game for retro fans, as “Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth” is a unique platformer with shades of Castlevania.
The game is actually said to be directly inspired by “Symphony of the Night”, and it shows… in all the best ways.
This short, but entertaining gaming experience is full of puzzle platforming, item collecting, stat building, elemental spirit harnessing and epic boss battling.
A very unique title to come to PS5, with particularly interesting origins… and a must play for retro game fans! What a way to start this best anime games on PS5 list!
Best Anime Games On PS4
1. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 (2016)
Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4 has found itself at the top of many of our anime related lists, including the best anime games of all time.
So you are probably not gonna be very surprised to find that this anime fighter has found itself at the top here as well.
The Naruto franchise has seen many games over the years, but in Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, we got the absolute best of every aspect of the series.
Action packed 3-vs-3 battles, 106 characters, giant 3d arenas, and an adventure mode.
And with a port for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch… you have a ton of options.
But it is on the ps4 where this game really shines, and that is why it is our number one pick for the best anime games on PS4.
2. Guilty Gear Strive (2021)
Guilty Gear Strive is one of my absolute favorite anime fighting games (another one by Arc System Works too).
And it is also one of the most visually stunning anime games out there.
And besides the fact that it has a ton of unique characters, with their own unique fighting styles, some crazy combos, etc etc..
It also has a really deep lore, which makes it all the more interesting to dive deeper into the game.
It’s always hard deciding the number one spot on the anime lists, cause there are so many cool ones. But we usually give number two to Guilty Gear, and we usually give number one to a game you will be familiar with by now.
3. Tales of Arise (2021)
Tales of Arise is absolutely one of the most beautiful JRPGs you will ever lay your eyes on.
So it is no surprise that it sold over 1.5 million copies since its release in 2021 and won Best RPG at The Game Awards 2021!
Packed with insanely beautiful environments, awesome characters, visually stunning battle effects, and stats all over the screen (which we personally find oh so satisfying!).
This one has been moving up the list of best anime games, and is on its way to becoming one of our favorite games of all time.
A well deserved spot on the list of best anime games for PS4.
4. Dragon Ball FighterZ (2018)
Arc System Works is a game developer who is responsible for a ton of amazing anime games that have appeared on our lists. And it is in Dragon Ball FighterZ where they were truly firing on all cylinders.
I gave it the number one spot on the list of Best Anime Fighting Games. And for good reason…
The cel-shaded graphics are insanely beautiful. Like.. unbelievably so.
And the 3-vs-3 combat is so much fun.
“FighterZ” saw the Dragon Ball fight series returning to 2d… and we love it.
I compare this one to the old Marvel vs Capcom titles. And it is that kind of 2d fighter game that is my particular favorite style.
And if you are a fan of the Dragon Ball animated series… this is the absolute best adaptation, in my opinion.
All of the characters, environments, camera effects and attacks feel straight out of the anime.
No doubt a sure addition to the best anime games for PS4.
5. Persona 5 The Royal (2019)
Persona 5 is one of the most unique anime games ever created.
It is an absolute joy to play, and packs a ton of diverse content.
All brought to us by Developer Atlus, who also brought us Catherine and Shin Megami Tensei.
And “The Royal” is an enhanced version of Persona 5 that was released for the PS4 and PS5 consoles…
Making an already insane game that much better with new characters, new story lines, new locations, new items, new music, and lots of other new stuff.
Persona 5 has won a ton of awards, sold over 5 million units, and is loved by pretty much anybody who plays it.
(And look at that, I did it again… Persona 5, 5 million units, number 5 on our list. Dang, I’m good.)
If you have yet to check Persona 5 out, the time is now.
6. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (2017)
Dragon Quest XI by Square Enix is a super cute game that speaks to an older JPRG style.
With wonderful storytelling, beautiful graphics, and that classic battle scene we all know and love.
Having sold over six million units to date, it is entirely a coincidence we also gave it our number six spot for best anime games on ps4. But like.. we thought it was cool.
Dragon Quest XI is a beautiful game, and one we highly recommend for the PS4.
7. Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020)
The only thing that can make Final Fantasy VII better is to remake it. Okay… that’s a weird statement. Haha. But seriously…
When we heard that they were doing a full modern remake of the classic game, we were very very excited.
The remake is presented in the style of Final Fantasy XV, another one of our favorites in the Final Fantasy series.
We have only seen the first chapter of the episodic remake, so we are dying for more.
But 5 million fans picked up the title, and we were one of em.
Final Fantasy VII is one of the best anime games of all time. And the remake absolutely follows suit, and takes a spot on our list of the best anime games on PS4.
8. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (2018)
I mean… any fan of the anime works of Studio Ghibli will need no introduction here.
But if you are somehow unfamiliar.. first of all… go watch a bunch of beautiful films from the studio, then come back and check out this entry for the best anime games on ps4.
“Revenant Kingdom” is the highly anticipated follow up to the classic JRPG Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.
Like that game, “Revenant Kingdom” is an action role-playing game played in third-person perspective that takes place in a stunning open world.
Fans of the animated films of Studio Ghibli or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will surely be pleased by the visuals in this game. ← me!
Unlike the first game in the series, Studio Ghibli did not produce “Revenant Kingdom”, but it still had a strong team with Ghibli character designer Yoshiyuki Momose and music composer Joe Hisaishi. So the essence is still there.
We were so happy to be able to be able to finally include this on a Retro Dodo list!
One of the best anime games of all time, and definitely one of the best anime games on ps4
9. Genshin Impact (2020)
Genshin Impact is an open world RPG with ports for Windows, Android, iOS, PS4, PS5, and soon for the Nintendo Switch.
It is a visually stunning game, and is packed full of things to do in the beautiful world they have crafted.
We actually find it hard to believe that all of this was given to us 100% free!
But if you are one of those people who enter your credit card info to buy new armor… this is a dangerous game!
In the first year Genshin Impact grossed over $3 billion dollars, making it the highest for any first year launch.
So obviously this title is still a big money maker, despite being free. Think about that!
10. Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles (2021)
“The Hinokami Chronicles” is a 3d arena fighter game for the Playstation 4 that is a must-play for anime fans.
I also happened to hear about the game before I heard about the anime.. so it had me logging into Netflix to see what the excitement was all about.
This incredible adaptation of the Demon Slayer anime has beautiful cutscenes, amazing battle mechanics, quick-time events, a semi-open world, mini-games and gigantic boss fights.
One of the best adaptations of source anime, in our opinion… you will feel like you are truly living in an episode of the tv show.
So when considering our list of the best anime games on ps4, we had no doubts that Demon Slayer would be on there.
Best Anime Games On PS3
1. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations (2012)
Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations is packed full of everything we love about the “Ultimate Ninja Storm” series, while placing a heavy emphases on fast battles.
The developers said they wanted to strip things down and bring things back to just good ol’ fashioned fighting.
But with nearly 100 characters to choose from, that doesn’t sound like we are gonna be feeling shorted on content.
And we also got a massive amount of original animated cutscenes, created by Pierrot who created the original animated television series.
So whether you are playing solo in the story-mode or playing with friends online, surely you stay busy and have a heck of a good time with this fast-paced 3d fighting game.
“Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations” made an easy appearance on our list of the 10 Best Naruto Games, and it’s nice to finally see a Naruto game take a number one spot that isn’t Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4.
Naruto manages to be the king of all anime lists, so not too surprised that it tops our list of best anime games on PS3.
2. Catherine (2011)
Catherine is quite an enigma of a game.
At its core, Catherine is a puzzle game. But it’s really so much more than that.
The game bounces between third person life simulation during the day and 3d puzzling at night (in the main character’s nightmares, in fact).
As you might expect from a game developed by ATLUS, it’s quirky, unusual, and a great time.
Catherine shared many of the same creators as the Persona series, so that should tell you a lot about what to expect here.
If the massive amount of working pieces in a Persona title intimidates you, Catherine is a much easier pill to swallow.
Still odd. But quite enjoyable.
Catherine is a pretty incredible gaming experience, and quite unique in its delivery.
Do yourself a favor, and check it out if you are unfamiliar. You’ll be very happy you did.
3. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX (2014)
We are so glad that Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX is a Playstation 3 game.
Like with the Final Fantasy X/X-2 bundle, we get to share our love for a classic game from a previous console generation in its glorious return as a remaster.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX is actually a collection of Kingdom Hearts II and related DLC content. That includes Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Birth by Sleep and Re:coded.
So you’re getting the awesome game of Kingdom Hearts II, as HD and remastered as it gets, and all the additional Kingdom Hearts II content your heart can handle.
Kingdom Hearts is an awesome video game series that throws the Disney universe in a blender with SQUARE ENIX, resulting in something as charming as you’d hope for.
So many of our favorite Disney characters make a cameo, and it’s fun to just see what character or world will appear next. Everybody, from Mickey to Goofy, Aladdin to Winnie the Pooh, Jack Skellington to Simba. The list goes on.
In this case, we weren’t sure if we were allowed to call this an anime game.
But with this one being a safe blend of that classic JRPG style with animated characters from the Disney universe.. we are calling it anime. Surely you won’t mind.
Here ya go… another incredible anime game for the PS3!
4. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (2011)
By my own measure, there’s two kinds of anime: the usual Shōnen Jump type stuff and Studio Ghibli. And thankfully in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch we get some of the latter in video game form!
When it comes to adapting that iconic Ghibli aesthetic in a video game, I’m glad that the gaming world took its time to get it right.
And how do you get a perfect Studio Ghibli style video game? Get a bunch of the people from the studio to help make it, of course.
So the Ghibli team helped develop design concepts, music, and even produced the cutscenes for the game. *chef’s kiss*
“Wrath of the White Witch” is actually a remastered version of the Nintendo DS title Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn.
Crazy to think such a wonderful game came from such humble beginnings. Not that the DS isn’t a special console. But compared to the PS3’s power, it seems quite modest.
We are just glad they had the brilliance to upgrade the title and bring it to the Playstation. We all win in the end.
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has been universally acclaimed by fans and critics, and it remains one of the best selling PS3 titles of all time.
But in case you needed us to remind you: Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is one of the best anime games on the PS3.
5. Valkyria Chronicles (2008)
The next game on our list mixes tactical combat with JRPG goodness, all in a crisp anime uniform: Valkyria Chronicles.
It was this Playstation 3 title that kicked off the hit franchise that we know and love.
The game play focuses on turn based war combat with a unique cast of soldiers, each with their own specialties that much be used strategically.
And as one would expect of any great anime game, there’s top notch storytelling with beautiful cutscenes and great voice acting.
The aesthetics of Valkyria Chronicles are quite unique as they mix cel shaded 3D with a hand drawn style, and actually uses a fully custom game engine called CANVAS to do so.
The game was such a hit, they even released a remastered version for PS4. But we are here to talk about PS3, so we won’t mention it.
Valkyria Chronicles is a great anime game for the PS3 for fans of turn based tactics and beautiful Japanese storytelling.
6. Persona 4 Arena (2012)
Persona 4 Arena takes all of our favorite ATLUS characters and drops them into an awesome fight focused game.
Not that combat is absent from the usual role playing experiences we are used to from Persona, but now we get to experience the world through the perspective of a 2D fighting game à la Street Fighter II or Marvel Vs Capcom 2.
Needless to say, it’s all gorgeous, over the top, and a ton of fun.
There’s a ton of awesome cutscenes as well, that stay true to that anime style we love from the Persona/Megami Tensei universe.
Of course, we mentioned this one on our list of the 10 Best Anime Fighting Games, and we are proud to include it today.
And just as a heads up: this won’t be our last game from ATLUS to make an appearance. So keep on reading.
7. Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster (2013)
If any game coming out of the Square Enix camp is eligible for our lists, surely we will include it. And lucky for us, Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster released on the PS3.
Final Fantasy X came to us way back in 2001! And the followup Final Fantasy X-2 came in 2003.
Both were absolutely perfect examples of a Square Enix JRPG.
This was the first time in the history of Final Fantasy titles that we got full 3d environments to explore, as opposed to the pre-rendered spaces of the previous entries.
This was also the first time a game was not an entirely self contained story. The characters and events of Final Fantasy X were so special that we got a full followup in their histories.
As we should expect, the environments are absolutely stunning.
And interesting fact.. the world is inspired by my two homes: Thailand and Japan. How perfect is that?
The original Final Fantasy X scored pretty high on our list of the Best PS2 Games Of All Time AND the Best PS2 RPGs Of All Time.
Obviously we love Final Fantasy over here, and Final Fantasy X has to be one of our favorites.
With Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster being on the PS3… it’s got an obvious spot here today on the list of best anime games on PS3.
Two great games for the price of one, can’t go wrong with that.
8. One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 (2015)
Next on our list is a game that is sure to overwhelm you with waves of anime goodness: One Piece Pirate Warriors 3.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing a “warriors” video game or even the One Piece Card Game, let me enlighten you.
The “warriors” series of video games are developed by Omega Force, and their game’s gimmick is massive waves of enemies to slay. Like… hundreds of enemies.
And in Pirate Warriors 3, we also get 37 playable characters to take into battle. So this game is truly a massive in scale.
Like previous “warriors” games, you’ll be hacking and slashing through tons and tons of baddies. And that is exactly as fun and cool looking as it sounds.
As the very last One Piece video game adaptation to come to the Playstation 3, we are happy to see “Pirate Warriors 3” crash its way onto our list of best anime games for PS3.
A truly good time.
9. Tales of Xillia (2011)
Tales of Xillia is a 2011 Playstation 3 exclusive. And it’s freakin’ awesome.
Like other games in the popular Tales series, Tales of Xillia is a perfect example of what we want in a JRPG:
Beautiful environments, cute characters, great storytelling, and so many things to discover that it’ll have you coming back over and over.
Besides being a hit with several of the dudes here at Retro Dodo, the game was also a massive hit in Japan.
Tales of Xillia won many awards and of course sold a ton of copies. Over 1 million copies, in fact.
If you didn’t get enough content from the original game package, Namco Tales Studio also delivered several DLC packs for the game, and the game even spawned several manga series’ and books.
You probably know by now that we are in love with the Tales franchise.. particularly Tales of Arise. And Tales of Xillia makes an appearance with that game on our list of the Best Tales Games.
Great to see this classic PS3 game get more attention, today.
10. Dragon Ball Xenoverse (2015)
Kinda hard to imagine any anime list without seeing Dragon Ball making an appearance. And today is no different… we’ve got Dragon Ball Xenoverse up next.
The game mixes elements of open world exploration and role playing with familiar 3D battles we love.
After a quick warm up of battles from the history of the Dragon Ball universe, you are thrust into a character creation scene.
Once your character is complete, you are off to the races… er… battles.
Yeah, you can explore the town, but don’t expect to avoid conflict. You’ll be getting in fights around every corner.
And that’s what you’re here for, right?!
Yup, you’ll be walking around, talking to NPCs, kicking a lot of butts, and having a great time exploring the Dragon Ball universe from an entirely new perspective.
It’s a really unique way to experience Dragon Ball Z, and we think you’ll love it if you’re a fan of the popular anime franchise or just love 3d fighting games in general.
