When we spoke to Palmer Luckey earlier on this year about the arrival of the ModRetro Chromatic and the roster of games heading to the handheld, he said that while the Chromatic was the ultimate tribute to the Game Boy and would be able to play all your favourite DMG & GBC games, the company would also be working on bringing new titles from indie and major developers to the handheld gaming scene, showcasing the incredible talent from all across the developer community. Hermano is one of those indie games that I’m very excited to be hitting the big time on Palmer’s new device, and it’s a game you seriously won’t be able to put down.
I’ve played Hermano a lot over the past year. Back when I wrote my article on homebrew games to play on Delta article, Hermano was up there as being one of my favorites. It’s an award-winning game from independent game developer Pat Morita out of Spain, a homebrew title that has captured the hearts and minds of players all over the globe with its heartwarming storyline, simple gameplay, and incredibly addictive nature.
The beginning of the story sees Mano visiting his brother Nano’s grave on the Day of the Dead. He’s captured by a demon and whisked away, prompting the Nano to rise up as a skeleton and head out into the depths of hell to save him. It’s a brilliant title that fans of Coco & Super Mario (niche, but that’s everyone really) will love, and with that Glow in the Dark cartridge from ModRetro (another nice touch), it’s the perfect game to play on dark nights when we get towards the spookier end of the year!
Nano’s features are incredibly cutesy too – it’s a game that appeals to all gamers no matter their skill level and is impossible to put down once you get started. There are 15 levels to play through including 4 bonus stages, as well as some neat enemies that you’ll need to use a combination of your head thwacking and bombs to defeat. The level parts where you jump upside down will really confuse you!
I’ve got this game on my phone to play with Delta, and as much as I love playing it on the go, having that physical cartridge as well as an instruction booklet and box will be so much more exciting to play on both the Chromatic and the GBC. It’s available to pre-order now for £32/$39 with a bonus gift of a Chromatic charm – just head to the ModRetro website to find out more!
