ATARI are on a roll recently with rereleases of retro games. It was only a few days ago that they announced Toy Story Retro Rewind, an upcoming game featuring an array of classic Toy Story games from the 90s and 2000s. Now it seems like Barbie is getting the retro treatment and even going as far as featuring a never-released game from 1994 called Barbie Vacation Adventure, originally made for the SEGA Genesis.

ATARI has teamed up with Mattel to reveal Barbie Rewind, a modern rerelease that "intertwines a brand-new Barbie DreamHouse game with 16 classic other Barbie games from the Y2K era". It will launch in November 12th for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch 1/2.

It will come in both a standard phyiscal edition that will exclusively launch for PS5 & NS2, alongside a Deluxe Physical Edition which features a premium, numbered box and includes an exclusive doll wearing an Atari t-shirt and blue jeans with long blonde hair with pink streaks and a full-colour poster. This Deluxe edition will be released for Nintendo Switch exclusively. Pre-orders are available from ATARI.com today.

Barbie Rewind features 16 classic Barbie video games – including such favourites as Barbieā„¢ Pet Rescue and Barbieā„¢ Horse Adventuresā„¢: Blue Ribbon Raceā„¢ – that have been enhanced to be accessible on today’s consoles.

The new Barbie Dreamhouse game is a cosy, creative world inspired by Barbie that invites players to reimagine the iconic DreamHouse. Style each room with a fabulous collection of furniture, decor, and accessories inspired by real Barbie playsets released over the past 65-plus years. To access many of the playset items, Barbie will challenge players to reach achievements by playing a collection of Barbie video games from the 1990s and 2000s.

ā€œWe are excited to bring a new Barbie DreamHouse game and this wonderful collection of historic titles to a new generation of players,ā€ said Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse. ā€œBarbie Rewind celebrates Barbie’s contributions to 65+ years of fashion, decor and more through the unique lens of video games, connecting with longtime fans and modern audiences with an unmistakable pink charm.ā€

  • Creative Expression: Choose from three retro Barbie DreamHouse exterior styles and mix-and-match rooms with 250+ pieces of furniture, decor and accessories inspired by real Barbie playsets through the decades – from a pink vanity to a ā€˜90s inflatable chair.
  • 16 Classic Barbie Video Games: Play titles from 1991 through 2007, enhanced for today’s consoles, including Barbieā„¢ Pet Rescue, Barbieā„¢ Horse Adventuresā„¢: Blue Ribbon Raceā„¢ and the never-before-released Barbieā„¢: Vacation Adventure.
  • Complete Quests to Unlock Items: Barbie calls players directly with design requests; completing them earns players XP and unlocks new decoration items.
  • Exclusive Digital Lookbook: Characters, including Ken, Teresa and Christie, will request design help, while players explore Barbie history through Barbie DreamHouses and playsets.

The Barbie: Vacation Adventure was originally developed by Software Creations in 1994 and was ultimately cancelled before an official retail release. Prototype builds for both Genesis and SNES later surfaced, which is why the game is now playable through preservation projects and ROM archives. This is the first time, however, that it has been officially released, and in some way, in a physical form.
