In a world where physical media is more important than ever and digital downloads threaten to rob new generations of the ritual of opening up a new game and getting that fresh manual smell, Atari prove once again that not all heroes wear capes. They've made it clear that their focus is retro, especially after reviving Infogrammes earlier last year, and now they've announced that five new cartridges complete with full-colour booklets and boxes are available to pre-order right now.
- Tiger-Heli is an arcade shooter now released as a cartridge for the Atari 7800+, with four stages to battle through as you unleash destructive firepower on your foes.
- Dennis Koble's game Avalanche sees players taking one or two paddles to catch falling boulders - if you're one of our younger readers, then this was what gaming used to be!
- Dark Chambers is a two-player vs. turn or role-based game where treasure hunters delve into 26 levels of mysterious catacombs. If you love dungeon crawlers, then this early example will give you an idea where it all started.
- Super Circus Atari is a homebrew update of the 1980 game Circus Atari originally created by Bob DeCrescenzo.
- Another game developed by Bob DeCrescenzo, Countermeasure II is a modern-day take on the 1982 Atari 5200 classic.
All five of these games are releasing as cartridges with a very reasonable price tag of $29.99, a small price to pay to have that CiB feeling with classic artwork again. And, if you happen to be in Milwaukee this weekend, then you can check out all of the games including Atari's line of consoles and back catalogue at the Midwest Gaming Classic!
