If the name Shane McCafferty sounds familiar, then it's because we've been watching his developing career closely here at Retro Dodo. I recently covered his new game Hero GP which captures the essence of titles like Road Rash and Mach Rider on the Game Boy Color. I bought it from Shane's Itch.io page and have thoroughly enjoyed playing it ever since - it's a great game to pick up and play between level grinding on Dragonyhm.
Shane clearly has a penchant for the days when Sega ruled the arcade, and he's channeling that into a new title that brings Outrun-style gameplay to our favourite handheld. It's in early development at the moment, but as the GBC never had an Outrun game, it's something I'm very excited to get my hands on to test out.
Here's some in-dev Outrun for Game Boy Color game play footage for #ScreenshotSaturday

That footage above looks amazing; it takes me back to a simpler time where games were tense because of a clock counting down and not some gigantic behemoth defeating me 100 times in a row on titles like God of War. And the soundtrack by Sloopy is something else entirely - if I had a glass of Sunny Delight next to me, I could literally be in the 90s while listening to it... albeit older and balder than I was as a kid.
Even though the graphics are very simple, Shane manages to create that feeling of progression and a tense race atmosphere and does it all without regularly changing backdrops. I'm a big fan from what I've seen so far, and if the world courses on Hero GP are anything to go by, we've got a lot to look forward to when the game is completed. Keep up the good work, Shane!
