I’ve covered a lot of collectibles here at Retro Dodo over the years, but I still find new toys that I never knew existed when trawling the internet for things I want to buy… I mean doing research for Retro Dodo. After speaking with Brent Scotchmer about his incredible Star Wars Figurine collection in our latest Podcast Episode, it got me wondering about what other exiting toys and quirky collabs there out there that I had yet to discover. I honestly never knew that Transformers had teamed up with Sony to create an Optimus Prime PS1 transformer, but now I want one for my collection as soon as possible!
The Takara Tomy Transformers PlayStation Optimus Prime figure transforms from being a PS1 console with a controller into the leader of the Autobots, with the controller forming a kind of arm cannon on each arm and the wire looking like a powerful energy source that Megatron would definitely sever the first chance he got.
The figure itself has all of the buttons and ports of the original console as well as a place to put a small memory card in. The buttons can be pressed, the disc tray opens, and the you can use the figure with or without the controller, giving you a bit of a MegaZord and Ultra MegaZord vibe. I love the AV ports on the back of the figurine and dual Transformers & PlayStation branding on the front too – its’ the perfect homage to two amazing franchises that, even if you didn’t know we needed, I’m glad we got.
So how much are these things worth? Well, I’ve been having a look on eBay and this figurine has been selling for around $300-350, which while not as exciting as Brent selling two figurines for $20,000 is still a nice little earner if you have one in your attic. On the flip side, it’s not too much (when collectibles are concerned) to spend to have a neat little piece in your collection.
