Have you ever wished musicals were less about falling in love or overcoming adversity and more about slaying vampires and lobbing holy water at Dracula? Well, your wishes have come true, because a Castlevania Musical is on the cards for 2025 according to Famitsu!
Yes, one of the greatest gaming series of all time is hitting the stage thanks to an adaptation by the all-female musical troupe ‘Takarazuka Revue’. If you follow your Japanese musical performance news, then you’ll know that the troupe also lent their talents to the Ace Attorney musical ‘Musical Romance “The Great Ace Attorney – The Truth Comes Back to Life Anew”‘. Now, the Flower Troupe, the first official Troupe of the company, are taking on the ever-lasting struggle between the Belmonts and Dracula, transferring the 80s gaming phenomenon to a whole new medium for theatre fans to discover.
Here’s a translated passage taken from the official Takarazuka Revue website describing the project in greater detail:
The “Castlevania” (overseas name: Castlevania) series is a gothic horror action game by Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd., characterized by its unique worldview, beautiful visuals, and classical and solemn background music. The story of the endless battle between Count Dracula, who is resurrected from a 100-year slumber, and heroes, centered around the Belmont family, a clan of vampire hunters, has been loved by fans both in Japan and abroad since the first game was released in 1986, and has been expanded to include not only a game but also an anime series that has been released worldwide. This time, this timeless masterpiece that shines brilliantly in the history of games will be turned into a musical for the first time by the Hanagumi troupe, centered around Touki See. With an original story and direction unique to Takarazuka Revue, it opens a new door to the “Castlevania Dracula” series.
Castlevania: Awakening in the Moonlight will be performed at the Takarazuka Grand Theater from June 7th, 2025 through to July 20th, 2025. If you happen to be in Tokyo in August or September next year, then it’s running at the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater from August 16th through to September 28th.
The main stars announced so far are Touki See and Hoshizora Misaki who are also starring in Angelic Lie this coming September and December, and we imagine a full casting will be announced nearer the time as is the general way with Takarazuka Revue productions. Tickets go on sale on Saturday 17th of May for the Takarazuka Grand Theater and Sunday 13th of July for the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater! Keep the Takarazuka Revue webpage pinned to your browser for then!
