The Thousand-Year Door was one of the best titles on the GameCube. I’ve always enjoyed Mario’s paper antics, finding them anything but flat and full of vibrant adventures that never fail to put a smile on my face. It’s been so long since I played the original game on Ninty’s iconic indigo cube that when I bought the remake on the Switch, it almost felt like playing a new game for the very first time, albeit one that felt comfortingly familiar.
For many of you out there, the Switch remake actually will be the first time you’ve experienced this adventure, which will go a long way to explaining why the Switch remake has surpassed the sales of the original game. I mean, the Switch is close to becoming the best-selling console of all time and has certainly surpassed every other Switch console in terms of sales which probably has more to do with it in all honesty!
The Switch offering has sold 1.94 million units and continues to rise, beating the original 1.91 million sold for the Cube. Ok, it’s not quite the 28.5 million sales that Super Mario Odyssey has under its belt or the 72 million copies of Mario Kart 8 sold across the Wii U and Switch, but it’s still impressive for the Paper Mario Series.
Maybe The Thousand-Year Door will continue to rise to surpass the 4 million copies that Super Paper Mario sold on the Wii and the 3.5 million copies of Origami King on Switch. Considering the new Switch will be backward compatible, there’s a strong chance that it will pass both!
