“Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition” has just made a surprising appearance on the Microsoft game store, leading many to believe it was loaded prematurely and by accident.

But both the game detail page and the achievements list, which has also been found by internet detectives, all but confirm that the game will arrive sooner than later.

With the 20th anniversary of the franchise falling on November of this year and only a few days left in that month, surely Ubisoft has a big announcement ready to go.

Like many retro game titles that have gotten the modern treatment (Half-Life 25th Anniversary, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, Turok 3 Remastered), we’re anticipating that the Anniversary Edition of Beyond Good & Evil will focus on bringing the graphics and controls to modern standards.

We’ve had no hints or reason to believe a remake has been in the works. And honestly, that’s how we would like it in this particular case.

There are plenty of awesome games from the past that do not need to be entirely rebuilt. Just give us some clean polygons and upscaled textures and allow us to play the game on a modern console, and we’re more than happy.

The original release of Beyond Good & Evil was way back in 2003 on the Playstation 2, Game Cube, and Xbox. And its HD re-release was pushed to the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2011.

That’s twelve long years since the HD release, and a lot has changed in gaming since that time. Surely there’s room for both the graphics and the user interaction to be improved in this classic title.

The removed listing on the Microsoft store mentions “up to 4K, 60 fps with improved graphics, controls, and audio, along with brand-new autosave and cross-save features”, which sounds about right.

And if we are judging the images we could see on that removed listing, the graphics are looking quite clean.

We’ve got a few of those images available thanks to the quick thinking fans who saved and shared them. Surely you’d agree that Beyond Good & Evil is looking quite good.

It has been reported that Ubisoft+ had a playable version of the 20th Anniversary Edition available to them for a short time, but I have not found reports of anybody playing it.

Wouldn’t that have been an awesome surprise for fans of the franchise?

Release Expectations

Again, with the 20th anniversary being in November, we’re fully anticipating the Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition to be announced any day now.

And the title should be expected to launch on PC, Xbox, Playstation and the Nintendo Switch.

We’ve included Beyond Good & Evil on several of our best games lists here on Retro Dodo. Including the best GameCube games and the best PS2 games.

And with the anniversary remaster incoming, it is likely coming soon to a “Best Remastered Retro Games” list on the channel.
