Atari has just announced the return of their flagship 2600 home console, newly enhanced and upgraded as the Atari 2600+.
The addition of the plus (+) in the title suggests that this new iteration of the 2600 comes with added functionality.
So let’s take a look at this return of a classic and see what we should expect from it.
Atari 2600+
From what we can see in the promotional imagery and video footage, the new Atari 2600+ seems to be a nearly identical recreation of the original 2600 home console.
There are some minor design differences to be found, and some modern upgrades.
But for the most part, it looks like the original. Which is exactly what nostalgic fans would hope for.
When you take this thing out of the box, you want to feel like you purchased it in 1977.
We do know that the Atari 2600+ has a new game cartridge slot that allows for both 2600 and 7800 game cartridges!
Knowing we will be able to play some of our favorite Atari 2600 games and Atari 7800 games on a home console that looks like the original does sound pretty cool.
The 2600+ will also feature HDMI output in widescreen format, to accommodate for the 45 year difference in technology. Oh, how things have changed.
Purchasing Information
The Atari 2600+ is available on the Atari website as a pre-order for $129.99usd.
It comes with one of their new CX40+ joysticks as well as a 10-in-1 game cartridge.
That cartridge features the classics Adventure, Combat, Dodge ‘Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, Missile Command, RealSports Volleyball, Surround, Video Pinball, and Yars’ Revenge.
Of course, if you wanna play with friends, you can also pick up another joystick separate for $24.99usd.
