Limited Run Games has announced a partnership with WayForward to revive a cancelled Shantae game for the Game Boy Advance.
This exciting news game as one of many projects in development shared at the LRG3 2023 Showcase.
As a massive fan of Shantae and an even bigger fan of all things Game Boy, this is certainly something I am dying to hear more about.
Luckily, Limited Run Games gave us an awesome behind the scenes look at this upcoming release.
Shantae Risky Revolution
Shantae Risky Revolution is a follow up to the incredible Shantae game for the Game Boy Color, which released in 2002.
That original game was a very easy entry on our list of the best Game Boy Color games. And I’d possibly bump it up on that list if I were to make it list now.
WayForward is the original developer for that beloved title. And they had began work on the Game Boy Advance sequel as soon as the first game was complete. But due to poor sales of Shantae upon release, it was ultimately cancelled and archived.
Thanks to Shantae’s cult following in the past 20 years and successful modern entries; WayForward has now been given the opportunity to see that cancelled game brought back to life.
And what better publisher than Limited Run Games to deliver Shantae Advance on real Game Boy Advance carts?
More Details
Everything about Risky Revolution is looking exactly as you’d hope a Shantae title on the GBA would.
It has that incredible aesthetic that many Game Boy Advance classics have, like Drill Dozer or Wario Land.
And the game concept is pretty unique as well, with a device that rotates the land above, allowing Shantae to access islands otherwise lost at sea.
This lost entry in the Shantae franchise delivers some missing context to many of the characters that would appear in later game entries.
So this is a vital piece of the Shantae puzzle that has been missing for over 20 years. And we are oh so glad to see it dug up from the archives and given a chance to live.
There is also a fun new multiplayer feature that allows up to four players to play a unique experience together (and you will only need one copy of the game to do so).
Impressions
Obviously, this is a really exciting project for Game Boy Advance fans. Because in 2023, we don’t have many new titles released for that incredible system.
And also those who are in love with the story of Shantae are going to absolutely eat this up.
Again, we are talking about a piece of the Shantae history that has been lost for over twenty years.
So a big thank you to Limited Run Games and WayForward for giving Shantae fans exactly what they needed. Even if we didn’t know we needed it!
