Not all heroes wear capes, but they do carry shields, hammers, and, in the Hulk’s case, have ready access to spare trousers. Join us as we check out the best Marvel games on the PS4!

The PS4 has played host to many incredible stories over the years. From the Witcher to Lord of the Rings, so many fantasy adventure epics have found a home on the console.

But perhaps the most coveted gaming experience of all is that of playing as an Avenger.

Many of us have dreamed of having super powers from a young age, and if you work for Retro Dodo, then that dream is still a constant possible reality that could just be around the next corner…

Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, Dr Strange; each and every one of Stan Lee’s creations has inspired us in both comic book form and on the big screen for years, and the great man himself left behind a legacy that will never falter or dwindle.

Though the first title in our list tried its best to bring the whole thing crashing down…

So, let’s jump right into the best Marvel games on PS4 and see which one, and which character, has taken the top spot!

1. Spider-Man (2018)

The results are in, the fans have spoken, and Spider-Man is officially the best Marvel game on PS4!

I’ll always be a fan of Miles Morales, but this PS4 game just gives me those old-school Spidey vibes. The Peter Parker in this game is an absolute crime-fighting machine too; he’s been honing his skills for years and is at his absolute peak.

Peaker Parker, some with a terrible sense of humour might say.

Rhino, Scorpion, Kingpin; they’re all here for players to beat down in stunning locations around New York City.

Plus, the game features an incredible original story where Peter Parker and Spider-Man’s lives have intertwined and a mission to clear Spidey’s name.

Plus it sets the scene perfectly for Miles Morales too, with his father Jefferson Davis playing a supporting role.

I don’t need to sell this game to you – it’s perfect from start to finish and is the graphical equivalent of sitting on a desert island with your favourite meal.

2. Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy (2021)

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy takes the silver medal in our best Marvel games on PS4 list, a game that will definitely surprise readers once they give it a try.

For me, this is very close to a perfect game and what the Marvel’s Avengers title in 10th place should have been aiming for. It’s fast paced, it’s fun, and it’s inventive too.

It doesn’t even rely on the voices of the actors from the movies to sell it, using characters that have been redesigned but based on their film counterparts.

Do I wish it was a little bit longer to play through? Yes, 25 hours isn’t massive, and that’s if you collect every single item and complete every challenge.

But, this is a game that you can play again and again and see elements that you’ve missed the first time around, so I can kind of forgive it.

The levels, the design, the humour, the characters – it’s a great game and one that you should definitely be adding to your PS4 collection.

3. Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020)

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is up next, one of the best PS5 games for the system and still a tour de force on the PS4 too.

Spider-Man is one of the top three Marvel characters that people vote for when listing their favourite heroes, but his games are a clear winner when it comes to character-led titles.

Swinging through the insanely massive word in this game and beating down enemies feels more like you’re witnessing a movie than playing a game. I mean, the graphics take my breath away; just look at the still below!

Miles is an incredible Spider-Man, and his game feels a lot grittier and darker than other titles in the series. It boasts so many new evil characters to take down and, get ready for it, a cameo from Peter Parker handing over some slick tips about how to become the hero of New York.

Open World gameplay mixed with a character that is way too impatient to walk everywhere makes for some stunning journeys too. I can just explore on this game for hours without actually doing anything.

I mean, I should be working when I’m doing that, so don’t tell the other guys in the Retro Dodo team, alright?

4. Lego Marvel Avengers (2016)

Lego Marvel Avengers

Lego Marvel Avengers takes the 4th spot in our best Marvel games on PS4 list. Unlike Lego Marvel Superheroes, this game follows the story of the characters between the first two Avengers films.

That’s including levels that go over the happenings of the very first film starring Captain America too, along with The Winter Soldier, Iron Man 3, and Thor: The Dark World.

So, if you’re mad for Marvel and can’t wait to wield a tiny lego hammer, then step right up!

The number of characters available to play in these Lego games simply astounds me. There are over 200 heroes to choose from in this game from Black Widow to Vision and more.

Play through the key areas from the films such as New York, Washington DC, Sokovia… the list goes on.

One of the things that I love about Lego games and something that you will have undoubtedly heard me say before is how the humour makes them so exciting to play. They get away with things that you wouldn’t be able to do in a normal Marvel film (apart from the Thor films that Taika Waititi makes – they’re wild!).

5. Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 (2016)

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 really doesn’t need an introduction once you’ve experienced the front cover.

Wolverine squaring off against Ryu, surrounded by every character from Chun Li to Rocket the Racoon.

It’s one of our favourite fighting crossover games of all time one of the most addictive Marvel games on PS4 that we’ve ever played.

If you’ve ever wondered who would win in a battle between the Hulk and Akuma or Dr Doom and Dante, then now is your chance to find out.

Pick your team, head into battle, and switch between players until the opposition is defeated.

Think of it like a Pokemon battle, except the Pokemon are Viewtiful Joe, Storm, and Deadpool.

I’d like to see Pikachu going up against them!

7. Marvel Iron Man VR (2020)

Iron Man VR

Marvel Iron Man VR is the one game that finally gives players the chance to feel what it would be like to step into Tony Stark’s famous suit and fly through the sky.

Making the list of our best PS4 flying games, it certainly provides a change from piloting a plane and far more action than normal flight simulators.

Your mission is to use all of Iron Man’s weapons to defeat the Hacker ‘Ghost’. There are tonnes of drones and machines to defeat in aerial combat through stunning locations too, all brought to the life by the power of the PS4.

While it might look cool in game, in reality you’re going to be stood in your living room wearing a mask and two wands with plastic balls on the end of them.

Still, I guess you can’t see yourself while playing, so that’s all fine.

Players upgrade Iron Man’s suit through the game by acquiring cool new features and weapons as they progress. If you’re a massive avengers fan (why else would you be here?), then this VR experience is the closes you’ll ever get to being part of the team.

6. Lego Marvel Superheroes (2013)

Lego Marvel Superheroes takes the 6th spot in this list of the best Marvel games on PS4.

I’m not going to lie – this list is pretty ‘Avenger’ heavy. They’ve kind of monopolised the Marvel market recently through their film appearances, but there are so many other incredible characters from the comics to discover.

How many of you know that there’s a Captain Britain, for instance? Then there’s the Fantastic Four of which Chris Evans played The Human Torch, and we can’t forget Ghost Rider too!

Most of the Lego games that have film characters in them end up being based on the movie said characters derive from, but not Lego Marvel Superheroes. It boasts a brand new and original storyline with (get ready for this) 180 different characters.

That’s some serious game writing skill right there!

So what’s the premise here?

Well, Loki has been up to his usual tricks. Along with Galactus, Dr Doom, and some other evil cronies, they have turned the Silver Surfer’s surfboard into a terrible weapon. Expect a tough battle for the fate of the world with maximum explosions throughout.

And Lego Hulk is always super cool!

8. Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite (2017)

Ryu vs Iron Man, Venom vs Mega Man – It’s time for Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite!

Any Marvel vs Capcom game instantly gets our adrenaline racing, and the incredible story mode in this game that sees players from both sides working towards a common goal is unbelievably addictive.

Work through the story mode in a bid to take down the vengeful Ultron Sigma, all the while embracing all of your favourite Marvel and Capcom characters with epic graphics and stunning background scenery.

Gone are the days of pixelated characters shuffling left and right in the background – just check out the still above!

When you’re not playing the story mode, heading up against your mates after picking your favourite characters makes for incredible gaming fun. It’ll feel like Christmas has come early every single day you play!

9. Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 (2017)

Lego Marvel Superheroes takes the 9th spot in this list of the best Marvel games on PS4!

We’re definitely going to be seeing the first Lego Marvel Superheroes game further down this list, but the second instalment in the series definitely deserves your attention and excitement too.

From Stan Lee to Captain Marvel, Green Goblin to Ant Man, players can take characters old and new into the fray as they take on a fiendish villain in a brand new story!

So who are we going up against this time?

Well, Kang the Conqueror is causing havoc through time, and it’s going to take both heroes and villains from the Marvel series to work together (as best as they can) to try and stop him.

Time travelling games always score highly with us, and having the ability to take items and characters through time with you as you play through luscious worlds with the trademark Lego treatment is guaranteed to put a massive smile on your face.

Plus, with a multiplayer battle mode that sees players going head to head using their favourite characters, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy!

10. Marvel’s Avengers (2020)

I’ve got to mention Marvel Avengers in our list of the best Marvel games on PS4 because it features all of the characters that we know and love from the films.

And, while the idea of controlling Thor and Captain America in an exciting third-person title sounds great, this game is a prime example of devs getting everything wrong at every turn.

I think they tried to do too much with this game and, unfortunately, made a bit of a pigs ear of it. The graphics are the only saving grace, with poor, short-lived gameplay and a frustrating multiplayer mode ruining the party.

The endgame for each of the characters in this game feels a little like the Avengers Endgame movie itself; hard to follow, over complicated, and just a little bit of a letdown.

What should have been an absolute mind-blowing game ended up feeling repetitive and lacklustre, which is a shame as there is so much potential considering the roster of characters available.

As I’ve said, the graphics are the main thing keeping this game in the top 10, and Marvel fans will probably still want to have a look for themselves before pitching it off to the nearest second-hand games store.
