It has been quite a long time since we have heard anything about the Tetris movie that began its production way back in 2020.
But that all changed this week, as it was officially announced that the film is to premiere in March.
As a giant fan of Tetris and as someone who knows a bit about the story behind the game, I am pretty excited to finally see that story told in a big budget film.
Update February 16, 2023: The trailer finally dropped, and like we expected - the film looks incredible!
Tetris Movie
I don’t know about you, but when I heard they were working on a Tetris movie, I rolled my eyes.
Because my first thought was they were gonna make a movie about a skateboard riding kid entering a Tetris competition in the early 90s, where the prize was a lifetime supply of pizza.
[Actually, now that I say that, it sounds kinda cool. But still…]
Thankfully, the movie would tell the story of how Tetris was created and subsequently snatched up by Nintendo. Okay okay, now you got me interested.
The true story behind the release of Tetris is one of computer nerds and international espionage. And that makes for a pretty awesome movie premise.
The film rights for Tetris was picked up by Apple and started production back in 2020. And they completed filming in March 2021.
The film was directed by Jon S. Baird (“Filth”), written by Noah Pink (“Genius”), and features Taron Egerton (“Kingsman”) and Toby Jones (“The Hunger Games”). That’s a pretty solid crew to deliver a serious film.
So we know that we are going to be getting something more along the lines of “Social Media” over something like “Pixels”. And that’s exactly what I’d hope for in a Tetris film.
Also, Tetris is going to be Rated R for its use of profanity. They clearly went a mature angle with the content.
All signs are pointing to a pretty great adaptation of the real story behind Tetris and how it came to be released by Nintendo.
Tetris Premiere
Things have been pretty quiet about the Tetris movie since it wrapped in 2021, and we were not sure if we’d ever hear about it again.
But the official Tetris twitter account just announced that the film would be premiering at this year’s SXSW event, which takes place March 10th-19th.
We also know that the film will be available on Apple+, presumably shortly after the premiere event.
Besides a premiere date and one image released by the Tetris twitter account, we know little else about the film.
But we should start to see more images and maybe even an official poster soon.
It looks like we will not have to wait long to finally check out the new Tetris movie!
