As much as we love fighting it out on the battlefield, I know a lot of you are interested in the bigger issues – like how to romance characters in Fire Emblem Engage (the easy way)!

It’s okay, don’t be shy, we love budding romances here at Retro Dodo as much as the next RPG fan. Years of playing Mass Effect and Dragon Age have prepared me for this moment.

If you’d prefer to skip reading about the fine art of romance in Fire Emblem Engage, you might want to try brushing up on our 10 best Fire Emblem Engage tips for beginners – there’s way less romance. As in, none at all.

Otherwise, it’s time to learn about the affairs of the heart and get romancing those characters who make you swoon.

How To Romance Characters In Fire Emblem Engage

To begin a romance with a character, you need to raise their Support Bond to S-Rank using the Pact Ring. Select the ally you want to romance and give them the ring to trigger a cutscene where they confess their feelings.

Although it’s a fairly simple romance system, there are a few steps you need to be aware of.

Chiefly, that you won’t be able to reach S-Rank Support Bond until you complete Paralogue: The Connector. This is when you obtain the Pact Ring.

You also need to bear in mind that only characters already at A-Rank can receive the Pact Ring, so it pays to continually build those relationships throughout the entirety of the game.

Lastly, while there’s no gender or age restrictions for romance options, not every option is a romantic one – some S-Rank Bonds are platonic.

Regardless of who you choose to confess your love to, be that romantically or platonically, you’ll receive a series of S-Rank Support Bond extras:

  • A unique skill will become available when using Emblem Skills together
  • A memento of your loved one will be on the table in your bedroom
  • Your partner will appear in a special Epilogue entry
  • In the Ally Notebook you’ll find an image taken from their Support cutscene (aka the romance scene)

How To Improve Support Bond Rankings

There are several ways to quickly improve your Support Bond Rankings when you romance characters in Fire Emblem Engage.

Increasing Support Bonds On The Battlefield

If you perform an action, such as attack or heal, next to your intended partner red hearts will appear; this a sign your bond has increased.

You can also experience a small increase by using Emblem Skills, such as Blythe’s Lost and Found, beside them on the battlefield.

However, these are relatively small gains when compared to gift giving or cooking a meal. Which brings us to various ways you can improve your Support Bond Rankings at The Somniel.

Increasing Support Bonds At The Somniel

The most obvious way to get that sweet, sweet Support Bonds boost is to gift your love interest with a little trinket. It doesn’t have to be incredibly valuable, even a Fancy Pebble will suffice.

Do this a couple of times and more Support cutscenes will open up to you.

In addition to gift giving, you can also cook a meal to enjoy with two other characters, one of which should be your future significant other. Of course, it helps if they enjoy the food you’ve made, so take the time to check their likes and dislikes.

Next up is a more physical approach (get your mind out of the gutters!), which is sparring with your partner in the Arena.

Although a useful means of improving your bond, it’s worth mentioning you can’t choose your partner will spar with – it could be you, it could Yunaka. So you might gain Support Bonds with your loved one, you might not. But, as a certain supermarket always says, “every little helps”.
