Pokemon Scarlet & Violet offers a lot of range before you even meet any of the Gym Leaders. However, eventually you’ll need to face them one by one, which is where we come in – we have the guides to help you out in a pinch.

Today we’ve got a detailed walkthrough on how to beat Larry, the Normal type Medali Gym Leader. If you haven’t already guessed, Larry’s Pokemon all fall into the Normal category, whether it’s their first or secondary type.

As many Pokemon veterans will know, Fighting is great against Normal Pokemon. However, before you can face Larry you have to pass the Medali Gym Challenge

If you’ve already read our how to beat Kofu article you’ll know that these challenges can be long winded. But worry not, for I have the answers you need to make this Gym Challenge a speedy experience!

How To Order The Secret Menu Item

Food is the be all and end all in this Gym Challenge. In short, you need to figure out what the local Medali residents order from the highly acclaimed Treasure Eatery.

You could try your luck and guess, but the aim of the game is to obtain clues from your fellow Gym Challengers scattered across the city. There’s three trainers to battle in total, with all of them wearing the Academy uniform.

The first trainer is located just outside Medali Gym; beat her to get the first clue. You won’t have to go far to find the answer as this trainer is standing right next to the place she’s looking for! Check the metal gate to get the phrase “Fire Blast”.

The second trainer is by the three ice cream stands, located across the road from the second Pokemon Center. Her clue will suggest you look for the odd food item out at one of the stands (it’s the blue, pink and white ice cream stall); look for the Grilled Rice Balls

You’ll find the third trainer just across from a sandwich shop, down one of the side streets. Battle him and he’ll give you the third clue to this puzzle, with you needing to find the gentleman with the blue bird.

Luckily, he’s at the end of the street where the trainer is. From a distance, listen to the bird until it says “Meedyum”.

The fourth and final clue can be found inside the Treasure Eatery itself, located by the Medali East Pokemon Center. Enter the restaurant and look for the businessman sitting at the bar; talk to him to get the clue “lemon”.

You now have all the clues you need. But to make it even easier for you, here’s the correct answers:

  • Grilled Rice Balls
  • Medium serving
  • Extra crispy, Fire Blast style
  • Lemon

Woohoo! It’s done and you’ve passed – now it’s time to beat Larry! Just talk to the waiter to begin the battle.

What Pokemon Does Larry Use?

  • Komala – Level 35 (Normal)
  • Dudunsparce – Level 35 (Normal)
  • Staraptor – Level 36 (Normal/Flying with Normal Tera Type)

How To Beat Larry In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

The easy way to beat Larry is to use Fighting type Pokemon, like Primape found in West Province (Area Three). When it comes to defeating Staraptor, Larry’s final Pokemon, an Electric type like Bellibolt is a wise move.

Larry is by no means the toughest Gym Leader, but his Pokemon can cause some real damage if you don’t utilise those type advantages/disadvantages.

If push comes to shove and you don’t have any Fighting Pokemon, just make sure to hit his party with the most powerful moves your Pokemon have. And avoid Ghost types

Depending on what order you face the Gym Leaders, this will likely be your fourth or fifth gym. This is mainly because Larry is a middling type, meaning he’s neither too tough or too easy to beat – he’s somewhere in the middle.

Larry Gym Leader Rewards

Larry will reward you with TM25 Facade, a Normal type move that doubles in power if your Pokemon is paralysed, poisoned, or burned.

Assuming Larry is the fifth Gym Leader you’ve taken down, Pokemon up to Level 45 will obey you. If Medali is your fourth gym, then only Pokemon up to Level 40 will listen.

By now you’ve earned a rest. However, Nemona has other ideas.

If this is the fifth gym on so far, she will turn up after the match and challenge you to a battle, and in front of Geeta no less! Considering you’ve just beat Larry, this fight shouldn’t pose any threat.

Now that you have a moment to breathe, it’s as good a time as any to check the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet mystery gift codes for any new exclusives.
