Best Grass Type Pokemon (By Strength)

Best Grass Type Pokemon

It’s time to creep through the undergrowth as we check out the best grass type Pokemon of all time!

There are over a hundred grass type Pokemon out of the currently known 921 creatures in the full Pokedex. They’re well represented, probably because grass is absolutely everywhere in the Pokemon universe.

I still have flashbacks about Viridian Forest…

Your earliest encounters in just about any Pokemon game (all of which you can check out on our all Pokemon games in order list) will undoubtedly be with Pokemon leaping out at you from the long grass. They’re always represented with one of the Starter Pokemon being Grass type too – so it’s perhaps no surprise that you’ll come across lots of Grass type creatures!

Which ones are the best though?

Come with us as we check out the best Grass type Pokemon!

10. Hisuian Decidueye

Hisuian Decidueye - 10 Best Grass Type Pokemon Of 2022 (By Strength)

Decidueye’s Hisuian form – a Grass and Fighting type Pokemon – was introduced in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Just like regular Decidueye, its basic form is starter Pokemon Rowlet, which evolves into Dartrix at level 17. Then, if you’re using Dartrix in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, it evolves into Hisuian Decidueye at level 36.

If you need some assistance, we at Retro Dodo have got you covered. Check out our handy guide on how to get Rowlet in Pokemon Legends: Arceus!

At an imposing five feet tall, this bipedal, bird-like Pokemon has some serious power. Along with its excellent Attack stat, it has a slightly lower Sp. Atk that’s nonetheless above average.

Hisuian Decidueye’s Sp. Def isn’t bad either. In fact, only its slightly lower than average Speed lets it down.

Otherwise, this Pokemon is a pretty good choice for Pokemon Trainers looking to stuff their teams full of Grass type Pokemon!

9. Decidueye

Decidueye

Just above Hisuian Decidueye in our best Grass type Pokemon list is Decidueye, which was introduced in seventh generation games Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon in its standard form.

To get hold of a Decidueye, you’ll need to evolve a Dartrix. As long as you’re not playing Pokemon Legends: Arceus, your Dartrix will simply evolve into Decidueye at level 34.

This form of Decidueye is a Grass and Ghost type Pokemon. Though its normal Attack is just under the level of Hisuian Decidueye’s, it’s Sp. Atk is better (as is its Sp. Def!).

In our opinion, Decidueye has a slight edge over Hisuian Decidueye. That’s in part because of the unusual Grass and Ghost type combination which sees it excel against a good variety of other Pokemon types.

8. Tangrowth

Tangrowth - 10 Best Grass Type Pokemon Of 2022 (By Strength)

You wouldn’t think that a walking mass of vines would be appealing or particularly strong. But, Tangela is a pretty cool Grass type Pokemon nonetheless.

Plus, Tangela evolves into the strong Tangrowth after it learns Ancient Power, which is definitely one of the best Grass type Pokemon!

Introduced in fourth generation games Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl (which you can check out on our list of the best Pokemon games), Tangrowth has some serious Defense, but its excellent Attack and Sp. Atk stats are what gives it such a prominent placing on Retro Dodo’s best Grass type Pokemon list.

7. Tapu Bulu

Tapu Bulu

This Land Spirit Pokemon is a Grass and Fairy type that debuted in Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.

It doesn’t evolve to or from any other Pokemon: what you see is what you get with Tapu Bulu!

Tapu Bulu’s Attack stat is very strong – and its Defense isn’t too shabby either.

Though Tapu Bulu’s other stats aren’t particularly outstanding, just its Attack and Defense are enough for us to place it on our best Grass type Pokemon list!

6. Mega Venusaur

Mega Venusaur - 10 Best Grass Type Pokemon Of 2022 (By Strength)

Evolving from Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, Venusaur is one of the OG most powerful Pokemon.

Years ago, the original Venusaur probably could have been a contender for number one on the list of best Grass type Pokemon!

Times change, however – and even forgetting other Pokemon, Venusaur has been usurped by another evolved form of itself, introduced in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y: Mega Venusaur!

Sure, Mega Venusaur’s Attack is high, but it pales next to its Sp. Atk stat. Its Defense and Sp. Def stats are pretty significant too.

At close to eight feet in height and with those stats, you definitely wouldn’t want to come face to face with one of these beasts in the wild. Mega Venusaur is an obvious choice for the best Grass type Pokemon list!

5. Shaymin (Sky Forme)

Shaymin - Sky Forme

Adorable, hedgehog-esque Pokemon Shaymin was first seen in Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl.

Though that aforementioned hedgehog look – which is Shaymin’s Ground Forme – is no slouch. With its consistently high stats across the board, Shaymin’s Sky Forme sees the Pokemon really excel from an offensive point of view.

Using a Gracidea flower on Shaymin during the daytime is the somewhat obscure process for changing it into its Sky Forme. As the name would suggest also adds Flying alongside its basic Grass type.

This increases Shaymin’s Attack a little, its Sp. Atk a lot and its Speed even more – turning it into a powerful, fast and deadly Pokemon that’s much more powerful than it looks!

4. Alolan Exeggutor

Alolan Exeggutor

Yep, it’s another OG – sort of!

Brilliantly bonkers, bunch of eggs Pokemon Exeggcute – which first appeared in Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue – evolves into the tree-like egg beast Exeggutor if a Leaf Stone is used on it.

Though not a bad Pokemon by any means, it’s the Alolan form of Exeggutor – which is the result of a Leaf Stone being used on an Exeggcute while in the region of Alola – that we’re featuring on the best Grass type Pokemon list.

Alolan Exeggutor trades a bit of Speed in order to become a bit more powerful in terms of its Attack stat.

It’s also extremely tall. Though a normal Exeggutor is a little over six feet, the Alolan Exeggutor stands at an enormous thirty five feet tall!

3. Kartana

Kartana - 10 Best Grass Type Pokemon Of 2022 (By Strength)

Though its species is ‘Drawn Sword Pokemon’ and its name also sounds like a weapon, Kartana’s distinctive look instead suggests a more origami-esque aesthetic.

This origami creation would likely give you quite the paper cut too!

Kartana is a Grass and Steel type Pokemon which first appeared in seventh generation titles Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.

It’s one of the Ultra Beasts, which goes some way to explaining why its Attack stat is so astonishingly high! Its Defense and Speed stats are also pretty impressive, but what lets it down – and stops it from reaching the top of our best Grass type Pokemon list – is a disappointing Sp. Atk stat.

However, this is one Grass type Pokemon that Trainers should definitely seek out – Kartana is a true heavy hitter!

2. Mega Sceptile

Mega Sceptile

Another evolved form of a Starter Pokemon, Sceptile is the evolved form of Grovyle, which evolves from Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire Starter, Treecko.

In order to get the Mega form of Sceptile (which is a Grass and Dragon type Pokemon), Trainers must Mega Evolve their Sceptile during a battle in the games Pokemon Omega Ruby or Pokemon Alpha Sapphire.

The Sceptile must be holding a Sceptilite too. It’s a bit of a convoluted process, but it’s definitely worth it!

Mega Sceptile’s Attack stat is above average, but the Sp. Atk and Speed are what truly make it excel – and place it right near the very top of our best Grass type Pokemon list!

1. Mega Abomasnow

Mega Abomasnow - 10 Best Grass Type Pokemon Of 2022 (By Strength)

Cute little Snover, which made its debut in Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, evolves into the fearsome Abomasnow when it reaches level 40.

To get Abomasnow to transform into the even stronger and more intimidating Mega Abomasnow, Trainers will need to use the Abomasite item during a battle.

It’s well worth doing so, because Mega Abomasnow has high Attack, Sp. Atk and even above average Defense, Sp. Def and HP too.

It’s a bit of a lumbering beast; yes, it does have slow Speed, but more than makes up for it with its devastating attacks.

All of which makes Mega Abomasnow a clear choice for the very top of our best Grass type Pokemon list!
