Now that most of us have finally managed to get hold of a PS5, it’s about time we checked out the best multiplayer PS5 games to play with your friends!
The power of the PS5 is immense, and while it’s perfect for playing single-player titles, it’s even better when it comes to getting online with your friends and immersing yourselves in some epic adventures.
And the best part of it all is that there are some incredibly titles like Number 5 in our list that are designed for two people to play in the same room, just like the good old days.
Yes, a couch co-op game on the PS5 – there’s no wonder I’m so excited!
From racing mayhem on all manner of boards and vehicles through to killer fighting games and titles that are great for a good kick-about, we’ve made a list of 20 of the top multiplayer games you need for Sony’s 4K behemoth.
Now all that’s left to do is to pick some friends who aren’t useless at gaming!
Table of Contents
1. Riders Republic (2021)
Riders Republic is one of the best sports games of all time, and easily one of the best multiplayer game for the Playstation 5.
If you saw our list of the 10 Best Snowboarding Games, you’ll already know that we are massive fans of the incredibly amount of fun to be had in this multi-player multi-sport title from Ubisoft.
Bikes, skis, snowboards, wingsuits and more. All in massive environments that can be shared with up to 64 players!
The events in Riders Republic are absolute chaos, and we love it.
One second you’re coasting your BMX bike down a dirt hill, the next you are gliding through the air in your wingsuit. And you might have 63 other players trying to squeeze their way past you on the mountain.
It’s a heck of a good time.
We have seen “okay” reviews in the past, but we think those reviewers got it wrong.
Riders Republic is wild, fun, offers a ton of replayability, is constantly updating content, gives players a lot of incentive to keep coming back.
And we think what RR does for massive multiplayer sports games is something that should be recognized and given more credit.
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies (2020)
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies is our favorite Call of Duty multiplayer experience for the PS5, because you and your buddies can blast some zombies together in exciting online or local multiplayer.
There are a handful of awesome Call of Duty titles we could have chosen for this list.
But because we want to emphasize playing with friends more than against friends…
Yup… your friend can be at their home on their PS5… or right next to you playing on the same console.
As splitscreen slowly disappears from from modern games, it’s awesome to see Treyarch keeping the magic alive.
With both horizontal AND vertical splitscreen options, this is such an awesome experience for more than one person in the room.
All with no lag, no framedrop, no sacrifices in game play due to the multiplayer functions being active.
Both players have their own game play experience, their own loot, their own purchase system, their own maps, their own everything… rendered on the same console.
Truly magical stuff. It’s wild what the PS5 can do. And multiplayer absolutely benefits from the current gen technology.
3. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (2020)
Fighting games have sort of become a big thing for us lately. We have put a lot of time and energy into the genre, and playing Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate has become one of our absolute favorite ways to spend a weekend.
MK11 is the perfect culmination of everything awesome from the modern series of Mortal Kombat games from NetherRealm Studios.
Awesome graphics, incredible mechanics, fatalities, all the blood and gore you might hope for.
And you can play with friends!
Both local and online multiplayer features are available. And obviously… with this being a 2D fighting game, there’s no need for splitscreen. You are both right there ready for battle.
The Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate edition was released in 2020 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, and featured the original MK11 with all DLC content and three new characters.
That makes Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate arguably the absolute best Mortal Kombat game of all time, and easily one of the best multiplayer games for PS5.
4. Street Fighter 6 (2023)
Street Fighter 6 is up next in our list of the best PS5 multiplayer games of all time!
Story is the name of the game in Street Fighter 6, with this game shaking things up a lot and giving you a an exciting narrative to work through.
Split into 3 modes, players can take on the Battle Hub, Fighting Ground, and World Tour.
But we’re here to talk about the multiplayer today, and man is it amazing!
Head to the battle hub and play fighters from all over the world, or go old school and play a friend on the sofa in the same room like the good-old SNES days!
5. It Takes Two (2021)
Honey, I shrunk mommy and daddy. Yep, it’s time for It Takes Two to take to the stage!
In this super cute and heartwarming gaming experience, you play as both mom and dad on an epic quest to improve your relationship for the sake of your child. Who happened to curse you to be a tiny wooden doll.
As the name might suggest… in this 3D adventure, you will need two players to truly fulfill the mission of this unique game title from Hazelight.
This game does not have a single-player option at all.
Game play is presented in two-player splitscreen and you must work together to solve 3d puzzles and fight chaotic boss battles.
It Takes Two truly hopes to bring players together and encourage us to work cooperatively.
It Takes Two was a massive hit, and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021 and the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.
There are also over 7 million copies sold worldwide, which technically adds up to roughly 14 million players? (With online multiplayer, we know that math doesn’t work, but still… it was a good line.)
Seriously… this is a truly amazing game play experience, and a must for our list of best multiplayer on PS5.
6. Gran Turismo 7 (2022)
Gran Turismo 7 is by far one of the best racing games on PS5, and with the intense graphics it entices players to be indulged behind the steering wheels.
A lot of racing games from the past don’t have multiplayer capabilities, but Gran Turismo 7 can go split screen mode like the good old days making it one of the best multiplayer PS5 games of the year.
This game has a wide range of depth, meaning casual players will have lots of fun with high levels of assistance or professionals can come in and really go all out competitive.
You can adjust the amount of assistance per player allowing you to make races as fair as possible.
It’s also a game that can be used for single player or online play, allowing you to get more use out of your investment.
It’s one of the best games of the year, so i highly recommend it, even if you don’t see yourself as a racing gamer.
7. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands (2022)
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands takes the 7th spot in this list of the best PS5 multiplayer games of all time!
If you’ve ever experienced a Borderlands game, you know that it’s a chaotic whirlwind of fun.
In Borderlands, Gearbox has created one of the best looter-shooter experiences. It’s the kind of game that keeps you coming back, because you never know what crazy gun you might discover next or what wacky character might be around the corner.
The Borderlands titles always keep the jokes coming and feature some of the best voice acting in games.
Along with some of the smoothest shooting mechanics in a stylized first-person open world with tons and tons of guns (literally billions of possible guns to find).
All that being said… three main titles in, the formula is feeling all too familiar. Still fun, but familiar.
So when Gearbox announced that they were taking one of the most beloved characters from the Borderlands universe and giving her a full medieval of her own… we couldn’t be more excited.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has the same aesthetic, the same comedic style, familiar characters, but all in a new world with some new features and the best graphics we’ve had from Borderlands.
But let’s be real… you’re still running around with guns blasting fools left and right. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
And you can play out Tina’s crazy fantasy story solo, or in online or local split-screen multiplayer.
8. Destiny 2 (2019)
Destiny is a game series that has taken an interesting path, though it’s greatest achievement is undoubtedly landing Destiny 2 as one of Retro Dodo’s best multiplayer games for the PS5.
The original Destiny title was an awesome game, and offered some really great multiplayer features. Some of those features were a bit annoying, because sometimes you don’t want randoms popping into your game… but there they were.
Destiny uses a shared world system and features both player versus environment (PvE) and player versus player (PvP) type events, if you chose to participate with others.
Or you can go at it solo and just experience the core story-mode, while watching players from around the world running around the same map.
The 2017 release of Destiny 2 saw major improvements to both the storytelling of the franchise, while also expanding on a formula that was already quite incredible.
And in an exciting twist, Destiny 2 became free-to-play in 2019, which means you get the entire Destiny and Destiny 2 collection for free.
The gun play is nearly perfect, the sound design is awesome, and the entire experience is just pretty fun.
Absolutely a game worth checking out, and one we had to include in the list of best multiplayer PS5 games.
9. Overcooked! All You Can Eat (2021)
Overcooked! All You Can Eat is one of the most exciting nights you can have with a bunch of friends sitting around the couch.
In fact, the Overcooked franchise is one that can be overlooked for just how fun it can be.
It’s one of those games that will have you, the other players and those who are just watching all screaming at each other.
“GO! GET THE CHEESE! GO!! TOMATO! TOMATO! SERVE!!!”
It’s an absolute blast, and one of the games on this list that is almost entirely multiplayer focused.
Three different iterations of the Overcooked series made an appearance on the list of the Best Cooking Games For Nintendo Switch, and we are happy to include Overcooked on this list of the best multiplayer PS5 games.
10. FIFA 22 (2021)
I personally might not be a huge fan of football, aka soccer games. But obviously millions upon millions of gamers out there are.
The FIFA franchise of video games has been one of those mainstays in the sports genre. We get one just about every year, and millions of players cannot wait to get the latest and greatest edition to the long running series.
EA knows a thing or two about making a sports game, and FIFA 22 is one of their most technologically advanced titles to date.
Their new “HyperMotion Technology” uses motion capture data in combination with an advanced machine learning algorithm to create real time movement in each player on the field.
This, along with all of the modern game era graphics and crowd simulation results in a pretty believable experience that will make you feel like you are sitting in the real arena watching real players.
Players that you are in control of.
You can play FIFA 22 in online multiplayer as well as local couchplay (up to four players).
That makes FIFA 22 one of the best multiplayer for the Playstation 5 without a doubt!
11. Dirt 5 (2020)
Is there anything more exciting than an arcade style racing game? How about arcade racing in the mud and rain?
I mean, the name pretty much tells you what to expect. This game is dirty. In a good way.
All the splashing mud, water drops, lens flares and water reflections you would hope for in a modern racing game. Oh… and at 120 Hz refresh rate.
And the reason that Dirt 5 makes our list of best multiplayer PS5 games: four-player splitscreen!
Yeah… a lot of games have online multiplayer, but not a lot of new games are keeping that split screen experience alive.
To see a current-gen game have FOUR-player splitscreen… that’s something that needs to be applauded and recognized.
For those times you just have to play alone, there’s a single-player campaign that includes voice acting by Troy Baker and Nolan North.
If you know anything about famous video game voices, that’s a pretty big deal!
12. Sackboy: A Big Adventure (2020)
If you’ve ever played a Little Big Planet title, you know what to expect here: Incredibly fun 3D platforming game play in a super cute world.
The Playstation 5 launch title, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, expanded on the already awesome formula from the LBP series, while making it feel a little more… well… BIG!
This is basically the PS5 version of Super Mario 3D World, and we are 100% onboard with that.
A fun game to play alone, an even better game to play with friends on the couch.
Cooperative platforming and puzzling at its best. The Little Big Planet series is as cute as ever, and “A Big Adventure” is exactly that.
This wouldn’t be a proper list of the best multiplayer PS5 games without Sackboy.
13. Overwatch 2 (2022)
We loved Overwatch here in the Retro Dodo office, and playing Overwatch 2 is no exception. More characters, more epic guns, and a new game mode for people to get to grips with.
Push Mode revolves around players trying to protect a robot while it moves across the map you’re playing on. One team has to try and destroy the payload, and the other has to protect the robot.
Yeah, it’s as mental as you can imagine!
The game itself is completely free to download and play, which makes it the perfect PS5 multiplayer game to get started with if you’ve just got the console.
It’s super addictive too – we’ve spent so many hours playing this game in the office, definitely one for the futuristic shooter crowd to soak up out there!
14. Deathloop (2021)
While Deathloop is a great game, it’s my absolute real life nightmare. Honestly, having to replay the same day over and over really isn’t my idea of fun, especially when you have to kill targets in order to break said loop.
It sounds mega stressful, I’m not going to lie!
Sometimes dying is just as important as succeeding, as with each new loop you can learn more about your foes, plan new strategies, try new alternatives, and essentially improve your skills.
The weaponry is mad too – you’ll spend a heck of a lot of time picking the perfect gun for the job, and the rest of the time double checking whether you’re the hero of the villain in your own story!
If you want to go multiplayer (which is why are here in the first place), then you or a friend can play as Colt, and the other can play as Julianna, his evil rival.
While the multiplayer mode is optional and the game lends itself to the solo player mode the most, we love the added element of tension brought about by having your mate constantly dogging your every move.
Sure, the AI can do it, but it’s so much more exciting when one of your colleagues is running after you with a gun!
15. NBA 2K23 (2022)
NBA 2K23 takes the the 16th spot in this list of the best PS5 multiplayer games of all time!
NBA games, like Fifa games, don’t change that much between titles. They might bring new courses into the mix and refine the gameplay a little bit, but the same premise remains.
You’ll be playing against legends of the sport and competing to be the very best. I know I made that sound a little Pokemon, but we’re very much still on Basketball here!
One feature that hardcore Basketball fans will love is the Jordan challenge returning, jumping into possibly the greatest shoes of the sport and recreating epic moments from his legendary career.
Graphically, this is a joy to play on the PS5. I mean, I know you wouldn’t expect anything else from this monster of a machine, but it really does look fantastic. You could easily be forgiven for thinking that you’re watching a game on the tele and then forget that you actually have to pass the ball!
16. LEGO 2K Drive (2023)
LEGO 2K Drive is up next in our best PS5 multiplayer games list, and it’s a stunning looking game that you won’t have any problems getting lost in.
Bricklandia looks insane with the power of the PS5 behind it. Just check out those clouds; that could be the most realistic sky we’ve ever seen on a racing game!
LEGO has always been about being able to customise your world, and all of the terrain is customisable in this game. Build a car using individual parts in game where the only limits are set by your imagination!
The main thing you need to know about LEGO 2K Drive is that it’s an open world racing game. The story mode is unreal, giving players the task of taking down the infamous Shadow Z by rising through the ranks of the racing world.
Get stuck into quests and build a car that can glide over water and drift around tracks like an absolute wizard in this family friendly racer.
If you’re a LEGO fan looking for the next new brick-a-licious title to add to your ever-growing collection, then look no further!
17. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 (2021)
I really don’t need to introduce Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 to any of you. We’ve all played these games more times than we can count here at Retro Dodo Towers on the PS1, and having these updated classics hitting the PS5 was an absolute dream come true.
Updated graphics make playing all of our favourite courses so much more enjoyable. It’s amazing to step back into the action finding video tapes all over again – we feel invincible while playing this game!
Tony Hawk and all the classic pro skaters return alongside some new characters to try your hand with. There are some new moves to master too!
Create skaters to compete with and skate parks to pull off epic tricks to your heart’s content.
And, you can either play local multiplayer like the good old days or head online and play your mates all over the world! This really is Tony Hawks 2.0 – the ultimate skating experience!
18. Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway (2022)
Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway takes the 18th spot on our list of the best PS5 multiplayer games, bringing some colourful, slime-fuelled action to the table.
If you’ve played these games before, then you’ll know about how much slime plays a massive part in the gameplay. Dodge green patches with your favourite character, picking from 40+ Nickelodeon classic characters and famous faces.
And this 3rd title in the Nick racing series actually has voice acting in it too!
Ok, so if you’ve checked out our games like Mario Kart for PS4 & PS5 article, then you’ll know that this is so much of a Mazza clone that it hurts.
We’re talking your cars turning into water-dwelling-vehicles from time to time and having the ability to drive bikes along with karts.
Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if Yoshi made an appearance at this rate!
With 36 different tracks to chose from, there’s a lot for players to get stuck into. And every Nickelodeon fan knows that slime makes everything instantly better.
19. Diablo IV (2023)
Diablo IV is making massive waves in the gaming community right now, and it’s not hard to see why. The graphics look incredible, and it’s got an amazing multiplayer mode that people can jump into both local and online.
Yes, local multiplayer! In offline mode, two players can get covered in digital blood and gore while harnessing amazing powers and exploring some of the most dangerous dungeons known to gaming kind.
We’re talking hordes upon hordes of monsters trying to destroy you at every given moment – I think you’re going to need to take your mates along with you at this rate!
2 to 4 players can play online; just make sure you pick your friends wisely or pick a friend that you don’t mind sacrificing when the going gets tough.
Not literally; I’m still talking about in the game!
The enemies we’ve come across in this game so far have already been insanely difficult to beat, though we wouldn’t expect anything else from a Diablo game. Four way attacks are always going to be the best ways to take down some of these monstrous beasts.
And let’s face it, is there anything better than heading out on an adventure with your mates on an evening, one where you can’t get hurt in real life and you don’t need to leave the house?
No, there is not!
20. Hot Wheels Unleashed (2021)
Hot Wheels Unleashed takes the 20th spot in our list, and it’s not just one of the best PS5 multiplayer games – it’s also one of the best racing titles of all time.
Come on, all of us 90s kids love Hot Wheels. It encompasses everything about that collecting obsession we all had back in the day, and all of the Retro Dodo team used to spend hours making awesome tracks in real life.
Now, we can do all of that in a game with fantastic graphics and make it all feel a little more advanced. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
Don’t expect any banana skins or blue shells here, however. There’s no weapons, but the cars are so cool that we can hardly take our eyes off them.
Drive loop-the-loops, ride around courses with more chicanes than a rollercoaster, and get ready for humongous boosts that take your breath away!
