It’s only Wednesday, and it feels like I have been writing about upcoming handhelds for weeks now, the Powkiddy X28 is one that slipped my radar.

The RG505, ANBERNIC’s mini handheld and official news of the Retroid Pocket 3 has filled this week’s to do list, but it’s finally time to talk about the Powkiddy X28.

The X28 was officially leaked a few weeks ago, but only an image of the back was shown, not enough for us to produce a news post on, but now an image of the front alongside rumoured specs has been revealed increasing our interest and finally motivating me to write this article.

With the ever increasing size of retro handhelds, it looks like Powkiddy are looking to add a chunky boi to their arsenal, perhaps to compete with the Win600 or the RP3.

Visually, I’ll admit, it looks a little underwhelming, but ergonomically it looks somewhat comfortable, and in reality that’s the most important part. But those sharp corners may surprise is.

It has angled shoulder buttons, large grips on the back, strong ventilation, a large 5.5″ screen and two analogue sticks too.

Powkiddy X28 Specifications (Rumoured)

  • 5.5″ IPS Touch-screen Display (1280 x 720)
  • 1.8 Ghz Octa-core UNISOC Tiger T618
  • Mali-G52 GPU
  • 4GB RAM
  • 5000MAH Battery
  • Android 11
  • Wifi/Bluetooth

What can it emulate?

On paper it’s rocking a nice amount of power with a touchscreen display to operate the Android operating system. With this kind of power it’s likely it can emulate the best Dreamcast games incredibly well.

It’s using the same chip as the Powkiddy X18S which from experience struggled with PS2 and large gamecube games.

But 4GB’s of RAM might not be enough to power your larger games on PS2 and Gamecube.

Only time will tell, but for the X28 to grab attention, it needs to emulate all Gamecube games at a reasonable price.

Powkiddy X28 Release Date & Pricing

As of now there is no official information regarding the release date, but if we had to guess, it’s likely to launch in September or October and be priced under $199. If it’s priced under $150, then it’s likely to sell a bunch with the specs listed above.

Do it, Powkiddy!
