The Retro Gaming community never sleeps, and now one of the rarest Super Famicom games ‘Rendering Ranger: R2’ is coming to the SNES in a brand new release.

Yes, a new SNES game is dropping in 2022; I live for news like this!

If any of you are wondering what the heck I’m talking about, then buckle up and get ready for some proper side-scrolling action heading your way. I’m not talking about Metroid Dread or Yooka Laylee 2; we’re talking old school, SNES action in a real SNES cart!

And who have we got to thank for this new release?

Well, the brilliant minds over at Ziggurat Interactive have teamed up with Limited Run Games to bring us this exclusive release 27 years after the Japanese version dropped.

To live in a world where new games are coming out for our favourite retro consoles is just staggering. The oldies are always the best!

But just what is Rendering Ranger: R2? How does it play, and why is one Italian guy so excited about it all of a sudden.

I and many others are super pumped about this release, and here’s why!

Rendering Ranger: R2 – Explosive Side Scrolling Action You’ll Never Forget

Whenever I think about side-scrolling games, I always go to R-Type and Contra. You’ve only got to check out our best GameBoy Color games or our best Sega Mega Drive games to find that these titles pop up time and time again, including our many other ‘best of’ lists.

Well, Rendering Ranger: R2 is a sort of amalgamation of both titles. It has the ‘run-n-gun’ elements of Contra mixed with the flying elements of R-Type.

In other words, it’s an absolute baller of a title with something for everyone and maximum action.

When Did The Game First Come Out?

Back in 1995, Manfred Trenz of ‘Turrican’ fame developed RRR2. It was only ever released in Japan and with a limited run of just 10,000 copies.

That immediately makes it one of the most sought after rare Super Famicom games for collectors. Cartridges alone can sell for upwards of $900, though there are some boxed versions currently listed on eBay for around $5,000!

For those of you that don’t want to spend a small fortune on a Japanese copy of the game, the news that North America is finally getting a release of one of the rarest Famicom games in existence should come as a nice surprise.

Dropping on a custom-themed Smoke Grey cartridge with a fully translated manual and box, players can finally stick this cart into their original SNES and game to their heart’s content!

What Is Rendering Ranger: R2?

Rendering Ranger R2 Gameplay

This incredibly exciting Rainbow Arts title sees players taking on a special forces soldier tasked with defending Earth from a swarm of aliens.

That’s right; you are the Rendering Ranger.

I always wanted to be a Power Ranger as a kid, but a Rendering Ranger will do just fine!

So what are talking here; beautifully crafted side-scrolling levels? Super-speedy shooting stages? Upgradable weapons and mammoth bosses in perfectly-rendered 90’s Silicon Graphics?

Well yes… all of the above, actually!

Remember how big the bosses were in R-Type? Well, in RRR:2, you’ve got to beat back enemies that are just as gigantic both on foot and in your ship.

Blast through levels controlling a dude that resembles Doom Guy, picking up weapons that get progressively more impressive and then piloting a ship while avoiding enemies attacking from all sides.

How Do I Get A Copy?

Rendering Ranger: R2 is releasing worldwide for the very first time and is available for Pre-Order right now.

Gamers can grab one of two models – the Standard Release, or the Collector’s Edition release.

The standard release costs $59.99 and comes with a box, the game, and a translated manual.

If, however you’re really excited about this news like we are, then for $99.00 you can bag all of the above as well as collector’s edition box, enamel pin, keychain, a metal coin, and a CD with the original soundtrack on it.

You’ll also get a poster too, the ultimate Ranger fan package!
