All God Of War Games In Order

Get ready to smash, slay, and be generally angry all the time as you step into Kratos’ shoes; we’re listing all the God of War Games in Order!

This series is brutal from start to finish. Kratos takes no prisoners, and if any character emobodies the ‘take action and ask questions never’ philosophy, it’s him.

Many of our readers will have grown up with Kratos, especially if their first console was the mighty PS2. What a time to be alive!

But how many God of War games are there, and what order did they drop in?

I bet there are some surprising titles below that you might have missed and compendiums that you didn’t know existed.

Sort out that collection and fill in those gaps; let’s kick off with the first title, shall we?

1. God of War (2005)

I guess a good place to start with our God of War games in order article is the very first God of War game.

Can you believe this came out 17 years ago at the time of writing? That’s ridiculous!

Yes, Olympus’ most angry progeny first began causing havoc back when the best PS2 games were thriving, and the series has gone from strength to insane divine strength ever since.

I think you’d be hard pushed to find a character as angry as Kratos; the dude has some serious issues. So, it’s only right that he wields the dual Blades of Chaos on his mission to cause even more Chaos throughout the world.

This first game has lots of Zelda-esque style puzzles in it which tickle the old grey cells, as well as killer combos that players can rack up points with.

2. God Of War II (2007)

God Of War II is the second game in order of release but the sixth game in the overall God of War timeline… talk about confusing!

The second offering on the PS2 supercharged everything. It was like they’d taken the first game and dropped it in steroids for a couple of weeks. We’re talking more action, tougher puzzles, and way more boss battles.

As you might expect, this game is steeped in Greek Mythology.

Destroy legendary monsters like Cerberus, the famous hound that protected the gate to the Underworld, as you make your way back to Zeus.

If you don’t know, Zeus is your dad… should have mentioned that earlier.

Wield Athena’s Blads and kill everything in sight. Simple

3. God Of War: Betrayal (2007)

If we’re listing all of the god of war games in order, then we can’t forget about God Of War: Betrayal.

Taking place after the events of the first God of War game, players control Kratos on a Java side-scrolling adventure.

And you know what; it looks a lot better than you might imagine a mobile-only game from 2007 should do!

As you can imagine, this game is mainly Kratos angrily killing wave after wave of enemy that want to stop him from leading his army to victory.

There is even a Hyrule Warriors-style mode where you literally have to stay alive for as long as possible.

Button mash your mobile buttons to pull off combos and finish enemies in true God of War fashion.

Pick up health orbs, wield magic and killer weapons, and take a leaf from Richter Belmont’s book as you swing from platforms with a whip.

4. God Of War: Chain Of Olympus (2008)

God Of War: Chain Of Olympus isn’t just one of the best PSP games of all time; it’s also one of the best selling PSP games too.

Though with fists as big as that, I guess you wouldn’t argue with Kratos about his inclusion, would you?

Kratos’ first portable outing didn’t dissapoint. This prequel to the first god of war game has lots of quick time events and puzzles to delve into.

Plus, there’s lots of Greek Mythology easter eggs like collecting Gorgon’s eyeballs to up your health.

That beats getting honeycomb pieces in Banjo-Kazooie, right?

The Blades of Chaos slice and slice just as well on the PSP as they do home console. Use the shoulder buttons to dodge attacks and wield magic to pull up shields against otherwordly attacks.

The gods send Kratos to attack Attica in this game, but everything goes to pot when Morpheus tries to take over the world.

There’s no wonder Kratos is so damn angry al the time if he’s being pulled from pillar to post like this1

Thanks to the PSP’s amazing LCD screen, this game looks super sweet still today too.

5. God Of War Collection (2009)

A few of the titles in our God of War games in order article happen to be collections, and the God of War: Collection is the first.

Essentially, this title holds remastered versions of the first two God of War games for PS3 players.

Is it worth buying in 2022?

I suppose it’s much easier to buy this than finding a PS2 and getting the best PS2 HDMI cables, though you might want to wait to grab a copy of Number 9 below instead…

The original games do look fantastic remastered, however. Players get games running at 60FPS, trophy support to boast about their skills, and a demo of God of War III. It also dropped on the PS Vita too!

6. God Of War III (2010)

God of War III is still my favourite God of War game of all the old classics.

It’s also one of the most deep too, with Kratos turning to the imprisoned Titans to head out on a mission to kill the king of the Gods… his dad, Zeus.

I think therapy in those days must have had a ‘less talk, more killing’ approach to it.

Playing a game as an anti hero kind of feels like gatecrashing a randomers wedding and doing a Kanye moment on the alter as they’re about to say their vows; so wrong, but so right at the same time.

The Chaos mode is insanely hard; if you want to get the most out of this game and your moneys worth, then give this a whirl. It’s the closest you’re ever going to get to feeling the stresses that the God of War has to go through!

7. God Of War: Ghost Of Sparta (2010)

We’re heading back to the PSP for God Of War: Ghost Of Sparta, another portable title that still gives me goosebumps when I play it today.

I don’t know whether it’s because I’m a history nerd or because I like post-apocalyptic style scenes and chaos that makes me so excited to play this game, but I can’t get enough of Kratos’s maniacal escapades.

Take Sony’s most brutal protagonist through Ancient Greece once more, wielding the Blades of Athena as you kill Minotaurs, Harpies, Gorgons, and all the other weird and wonderful creatures that crop up in Greek Mythology.

For a hack and slash title, it’s got a lot of the same puzzles that make the God of War games so damn addictive. Play to unlock the Arms of Sparta and tackle the God of Death.

Bloodcurdling battles and a chance to immerse yourself in the greatest period from history. What’s not to love?

8. God Of War: Origins Collection (2011)

If, for some reason, you’re not a huge fan of the PSP or sold yours after reading our ‘how much is a PSP worth‘ article, then the God Of War: Origins Collection might be of interest!

This game takes both PSP titles and remasters them on the PS3.

That’s right; Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta on the big screen together in one disc.

If you’re looking for the ultimate Kratos prequel experience, then this disc comes with the DLC content for Ghost of Sparta included too.

After receiving the 1080p treatment on the PS3, these games look and play smoother than a lightening bolt cutting through cloud. Plus, there’s something about feeling the rumble through the DualShock controller as Kratos goes on the rampage that will never get old.

9. God of War Saga (2012)

God of War Saga has all of the main God of War games in order as well as the PSP handheld titles all on one disc.

Ok, so this is a bit of a ‘filler’ game to keep people ocuppied until the new title came out a year later, but having all the games in one place is a nice idea for both fans of the series and newbies looking to get into God of War, especially now it’s so cheap second hand!

Players can try their divine hand at God of War, God of War II, and God of War III.

Both prequel titles from the God of War Origins Collection appear too; Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta.

Thankfully, the next title is a new one; no more collections, I promise!

10. God Of War: Ascension (2013)

God of War: Ascension sits at 10th position in terms of release date but is another prequel.

Kratos really had a lot of backstory; I think not even Melkor/Morgoth had this many outings in Tolkien’s early tales!

Kratos is fighting back against Aries after being tricked into killing his own family. It’s a game of vengeance, with Kratos baying for blood… and it doesn’t really matter whose blood that is.

In this last PS3 offering, the weapon system sees an overhaul.

The Blades of Chaos are still in full operation, but Kratos can now use different weapons from time to time as well as picking up new magical abilities based on legendary Gods.

Unleash epic Rage attacks, control time, play as a shadow; these divine dudes get all the fun!

And for the first time ever, players could get online and fight their mates.

Unfortunately, those servers are now dead and buried, much like many of my mates were after I teamed up with Hades and destroyed them in the Team Favor of the Gods mode!

11. God Of War 4 (2018)

God of War 4 is more than just a game; it’s a work of art.

I think that’s fair to say, considering it’s featured in so many different Retro Dodo lists and has won more accolades than the whole team has had hot dinners.

That’s a lot, if you were unsure.

Kratos has certainly had things hard of late. He’s even grown an incredible beard to show how haggard and annoyed he is by life.

Not only that, but he’s got a minor to look after now… his own son.

I suppose you could say that he’s come a long way from trying to kill of the Greek Gods; now he’s a dad who must impart wisdom to his son… but what he actually does is just grunt a lot and bark orders.

Not content with killing all of the Greek Gods, he’s now making his way onto the Norse ones., I guess when Zeus is dead, there’s not much sport in it anymore, and a change is as good as a rest!

Kratos now has a magic axe that comes to him when he commands it. That sounds a lot like Thor’s Hammer Mjölnir, but what do I know…

This game has a lot of RPG elements like crafting armour and collecting both money and items through the levels.

And even though the axe is cool, you can get the Blades of Chaos later on. Nostalgia rules!

12. God Of War: Ragnarok (2022)

God Of War: Ragnarok ends our current listings for all the God of War games in order. Launched in November 2022, it continues the stellar work done by the previous game and throws players straight back into the action where the last title left off.

Kratos and Atreus (that’s Kratos Jr) are delving even further into Norse Mythology here. Work together as you plunge into the Nine Realms as Asgard prepares for an almighty war.

This multidimensional title sees Kratos making an army of allies from each realm, battling gods and monsters from the annals of Norse Mythology.

One thing I will say is that you should definitely play God of War 4 (the previous title) through fully before tackling this game. There is a recap for people to watch before playing, but it’s designed to jog players’ memories of the key events that happened rather than giving a newbie a firm grasp of the previous game.

I’m currently playing through this title now and I’m conscious that I don’t want to give too much away if you’re also in the thick of the action.

All I will say is, that initial fight with Thor will go down as one of the best video game battles in history!
