More and more emulator applications seem to be making its way to iOS thanks to Apple relaxing its regulations on the app store, and one that many have been wanting for some time now is Nintendo 3DS emulation.
As someone who has reviewed hundreds of handheld emulators, I know from experience that silky smooth Nintendo DS emulation is hard to come by because of its power intensive demands.
But because modern day iPhones pack some serious specs and Apple has relaxed their app store it’s now possible to play your favourite Nintendo 3DS games on your iPhone thanks to a new app called Folium.
Folium costs £4.99/$4.99 and comes with a slick and easy to understand user interface that enables you to install your ROM files and open them up to be played. It will require you to source your bios files, which can be an awkward process, especially on such a small device, but once done, sink your ROMs and it will open up two screens and iddy biddy controls at the bottom of your phone.
What can it emulate:
- Game Boy Advance
- Nintendo 3DS
- Nintendo DS
That’s right not only can it emulate your favourite DS/3DS games but it can also dabble in Game Boy emulation which is a nice addition, even if its not as good as Delta in my opinion.
Like other emulator applications, you can sink up a wide number of bluetooth controllers to this doo, including Joy-cons, which is usually hit and miss. Here’s the supported controllers list:

- Nintendo Switch Joy-Con
- Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- PlayStation DualShock 4
- PlayStation 5 DualSense
- Xbox Series S
- Xbox Series X
Matching these controllers will undoubtedly increase the enjoyment and comfortability, even if some iPhone users have been complaining about the emulators performance and quality. This is likely due to many using older models of the iPhone, so I do recommend using the latest iPhone should you want the best gaming experience.
