According to retro handheld content creator @retrohandheldcollection on Instagram (who has a history of revealing handhelds that come to fruition and kindly informed us of this leak) Powkiddy are working on a new handheld called the RGB20SX.

It may look familiar to some of you as it’s a direct upgrade to their older Powkiddy RGB20S which I surprisingly enjoyed, even if it did cut corners in places.

The “X” version of this handheld brings some new specs, taken directly from the Powkiddy RGB20 which we have also reviewed.

JD (from @retrohandheldcollection) spoke with us and mentioned that this will basically be the Powkiddy RGB30 in a vertical format, with a 1:1 display, dual analogue stick which have been repositioned after many of the community demanded and the same specs internally.

That likely means a 1.8Ghz Quad-Core RK3356 chipset, 1GB RAM, 4″ (720 x 720) display and 41000MAH’s of battery, although this is not yet confirmed.

That in itself is a nice upgrade to a handheld that I would class as a “big seller” for Powkiddy. The addition of the new 1:1 display makes it different enough to see a visual change, and the new CPU will allow great PS1 and some PSP emulation.

With the Chinese New Year being over, it’s likely Powkiddy will officially reveal this over the coming weeks, and I think it will go down well with many as it’s a great looking device.

That said, they are still keeping those terrible shoulder buttons, they have the space to make something comfortable here but have decided to go against it for some reason, likely because it’ll cost too much to change.

While on the subject of costs, I can imagine this will be sub $100, especially if they want it to be a success. The handheld scene is more competitive than ever, and gamers will only show interest if it’s actually affordable, which I believe Powkiddy will do.

Powkiddy will likely launch a range of colors for the device too, although we were informed the Peach colorway may not become a reality, which is a shame as the Peach coloring is under used in the retro handheld space!

I am interested to see how Powkiddy prices this as their previous RGB30 was a huge success in the space, with many buying it as their first retro device, or for a friend to enter the scene.

It’s certainly not going to compete with Miyoo, ANBERNIC or GoRetroid in anyway but we will just have to wait and see if the new 1:1 screen alongside the speed bump makes it a good $100 competitor.

We’ll try our hardest to get our hands on one early to review for you.
