Just a couple of weeks after finishing my review of the MagicX Zero40 and stating how wonderful it was for Nintendo DS enthusiasts and wishing them a successful future, they then go and tease a new handheld
On their official Discord server, they have teased a couple of photos that showcase the potential design of their upcoming Retro45.
According to MagicX's team, the Retro45 "performs Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Mega Drive perfectly". This makes me believe they are focusing this device on SEGA enthusiasts, with a sprinkling of Nintendo 64.
The addition of Nintendo 64 makes sense due to the 6-button layout required to control the games smoothly. Teased images show a DPAD, an analogue stick, 6-face buttons with four of them featuring the iconic N64 arrows, alongside a look at the back shoulder buttons, which happen to be stacked.

The image of the shoulder buttons at first makes the device look long, just like the MagicX Zero40; however, a closer look will reveal that the handheld isn't as long. Look at the bottom right corner and you can see the handheld beginning to curve back in.
I believe this will feature a 4:3 display to efficiently emulate retro SEGA consoles and N64 games, making the device wider than it is long, nothing like the Zero40.
"Providing an experience closest to the original device".
MagicX Team
I have taken some time to etch a design on Photoshop quickly. I could have given it to AI to interpret, but we're a no-AI publication here, so my tacky designs will have to do.

I would like to see MagicX take inspiration from the Mega Drive controllers, and perhaps even the Dreamcast controllers with large grips around the palm of your hands to increase comfort.
MagicX have a history of pricing their devices competitively, under $99, so I can imagine this won't have the latest technology inside; however, it's likely they will try and create an incredible, affordable device for those wanting the above-stated emulation.
Only time will tell, but we're excited for this one, especially if it's priced under $80 like their previous device! We'll keep you updated. To not miss out, join our free newsletter.
