Retro game fans who know the hidden gems will be excited to hear that the Gimmick! Special Edition is coming to current gen systems. Yes, Gimmick! is getting a re-release!
Those unfamiliar with Gimmick will be pleased to hear that it shares a lot in common with platformer classics like Trip World and the Mega Man Games series. It also predated Kirby by a few months.
And of course, it was also developed by the legendary team behind the previously mentioned Trip World, SUNSOFT.
If you’ve experienced Trip World or games like Kirby’s Dream World, then you’ve got a pretty good idea of what to expect in here.
It’s one of those obscure lesser known platformers that is a must-play for fans of the genre. The definition of a hidden gem.
So let’s take a closer look and see what new is coming to the world of Gimmick.
Gimmick!
Gimmick! (aka Mr. Gimmick) was released in 1992 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. And it predated Sunsoft’s more well known platformer Trip World by about 11 months.
And it is absolutely one of the most impressive platforming games to ever come to the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Like Trip World or Kirby… Gimmick combines fun and cuteness with some pretty advanced graphics, sound, and programming to create an incredible game.
The game was created when the Super Nintendo system had already been released. So there was some pressure to make sure they could make a game that would impress even those playing games like Super Mario World. And I’d say they succeeded!
The graphics: Awesome. The music: Magical. The game play: Wild.
Special Edition
The new updated release of Gimmick! features all of the modern touches you’d hope for in a retro game release…
Save states to quickly jump back to your last position if you need a break. A rewind in case you make a major mistake that you do not accept. And online leaderboards to prove you are the best.
With a challenging platformer, that rewind feature is gonna be a big bonus. I hate to admit it, but I use it a lot when I play games on my emulators.
There’s also a brand new speed running mode to allow for the quickest possible completion of the game. Which kind of blows my mind to think about. I’ll leave that feature to the experts.
There is a physical release of Gimmick! planned, with exact details to be announced at a later date.
For those who wanna grab the digital edition, Gimmick! Special Edition launches July 6th on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PS4.
Update May 10, 2023: Just hours after we posted, Limited Run Games announced that they will be handling the physical edition launch. So we now know that the Gimmick! Special Edition for Nintendo Switch and PS4 pre-orders launch on Tuesday, May 16th.
