Firmament is the new mysterious exploration game coming from the legendary video game team Cyan Worlds.
You’d surely know the works of Cyan from their massive hit Myst and its followup Riven.
I was a massive fan of these two titles back when they released on PC, and I even took a liking to the books that were written in the Myst universe. In fact, my first tattoo was Myst related!
If you follow the subsequent releases of Cyan, it’s quite clear that they have a specific niche: lonely first person puzzle exploration.
And in their games you’re typically dropped into a mysterious world with no idea what exactly is going on.
It would seem that Firmament is gonna be more of that unique brand of puzzling mystery. And from the looks of it, this could be their best release yet!
Firmament
The world of Firmament looks absolutely massive, detailed, beautiful, and like it has a lot to offer explorers. Exactly what we would hope for in an evolution from the creators of Myst and Riven.
The variety in the environments we’ve seen in the trailers and teaser images is quite diverse, and we know that we’ll be seeing both interiors and exteriors of many kinds.
As to be expected, those environments mix breath taking nature with mysteriously abandoned structures.
Cyan has mentioned “3 Realms” on their Twitter, so that has us wondering if that means three major environment groups or if we’re going to be facing some sort of multiverse type situation.
One of the coolest elements is the interesting arm canon that we will be equipped with. It gives the game play a bit of a first person shooter vibe.
But I wouldn’t anticipate shooting any characters in this massive world. We’ll likely only be using it to blast puzzle triggers and door locks.
In recent a Twitter teaser from Cyan, we were given the hint that we are not gonna be alone in the world of Firmament.
We do see what appear to be ghosts of some sort in previously released game images.
So it would seem that the world of Firmament is yet another ghost town. And it is our job to find out what the heck is going on. And also to escape?
Release Information
Cyan excels at building beautiful 3d worlds full of interactive puzzles. So if that is your particular flavor of video game, Firmament is gonna be the next best addition to your library.
With the last title from Cyan coming six years ago (Obduction), I’m really looking forward to seeing what their latest title has to offer.
The new world looks absolutely beautiful. It looks like what happens if the worlds of Horizon Zero Dawn and BioShock collide and someone forgot to add the other characters.
We’ve certainly come a long way since the point and click exploration of the first Myst release.
Cyan’s worlds can now be explored in full 3d, and the quality and size of the experiences have expanded greatly.
Oh, and speaking of exploring in 3d, we should also mention that Firmament is also going to be available for VR as well! So they really are taking things to the next level with this one.
The PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation VR 2 versions are planned to release soon, but no release dates set.
So if you wanna play this one as soon as possible, you’ll wanna get your computer ready…
Firmament drops on May 18th on the Steam Store for MacOS and Windows. That’s both the standard and VR versions.
If you can manage to take a few hours away from Tears of the Kingdom, why not give it a try?
