To add the the never-ending collection of oddly named retro handhelds, budget handheld brand XURetro has revealed their all new handheld.

Named the XU20 V32, this is a starter device, priced at just $53, making it the most expensive handheld of their lineup. It comes in four unique transparent colours: green, purple, blue and black.

It runs on Android and features a 3.2" IPS Display with a resolution of 1024x768, making it a compact and very portable vertical handheld.

We have yet to review any XURetro devices. They're certainly not a "premium" handheld manufacturer, but these are some of the cheapest devices that focus on retro gaming emulation we have seen, which may make it a good option for those gamers on a budget.

XU20 V32 Specifications

  • 3.2-inch IPS full-view, zero-distance OCA full lamination, 1024*768
  • AllWinner Cortex-A53 A133P 1.8G processor
  • IMG PowerVR GE8300 graphics
  • DDR4 2GB 1866MHz RAM
  • 2.4G WIFI connectivity
  • Polymer lithium-ion battery, 3200mAh, 5-7 hours battery life

It's their first Android device, with a touchscreen display. Their previous two handhelds ran on a Linux OS and were under $30. Now they want to go a step further and provide a truly affordable Android retro gaming device with WiFi, a touchscreen and 2GB's of RAM.

I am not entirely sure what this can emulate until I test it, but I can imagine it will handle emulation up to Playstation 1 with these specs, and the design makes this thing look somewhat comfortable to enjoy that, especially on a 3.2" display.

Anything small and PS1 games would certainly strain the eyes after long play times.

That said, it's good to see affordable handhelds enter the battlefield. Many of our favourite affordable brands have evolved into not-so-affordable handheld brands, such as ANBERNIC and GoRetroid.

So, I hope XURetro can get this right and please all of us who don't want the latest and greatest chips or displays. We'll be keeping a close eye on XURetro.

This device is limited to just 600 units and ships on August 25th.
