Another day another ANBERNIC handheld announcement, and this time it’s a horizontal form factor with a new layout, a bit like the RG40XXH but with design and ergonomic elements taken from the RG Cube.
It feels like every year or so there is a major design change, that then makes waves through their handheld lineup over many months, to make all of their devices feel new and fresh, when in reality they tend to do one thing every so slightly better.
Their horizontal handhelds have been some of my favourites in the past, especially their metal variants, which unfortunately are not in production anymore and now metal device has been released from ANBERNIC in a very long time.
The ANBERNIC RG406H features a 4″ IPS touchscreen 4:3 display with a resolution of 960 x 720 and features black bezels, which I thought was a thing of the past but ANBERNIC seem to be clinging onto them, whereas GoRetroid’s Pocket Mini and others have gone bezel-less this year.
According to ANBERNIC this can emulate all the way up to Playstation 2, Gamecube and Nintendo Wii featuring the T820 CPU which is what’s been featured in the RG Cube. This is addmittedly a powerful CPU but it’s certainly a push to say it can emulate all PS2 games, but only time will tell.
It’s also likely that it will keep the good build quality that has featured in some of their newer devices. For example their upgraded shoulder buttons are very welcome, the LED hall-joysticks are fun even if they have limited travel and the DPAD is great for fighting games too.
It will also run Android so you can play your favourite android games on the go alongside cloud streaming which might be a little cramped on a 4″ display, but its still likely possible for those that are crazy like that.
This announcement puts ANBERNIC in the double digits for releases this year, which is absolute madness. At this moment in time there is no official release date, but if I had to guess it will release in a few weeks and be priced at around $150+, we’ll inform you as soon as we know. It also comes in a choice of three different colours, black, white and transparent purple.
