New Digimon Game ‘Digimon Survive’ Dropping In 2022

New Digimon Game - Digimon Survive Game Case For PS4 & PS5

If you’ve been holding onto your precious Digivice since 1999 hoping that one day it might be needed, then you’ll be excited to know that there’s a new Digimon game, Digimon Survive, coming out for all of the major consoles in 2021!

With so much hype surrounding the new Pokemon game that is said to be dropping in 2021, there’s certainly a lot for pocket monster fans to be excited about.

It certainly seems like a long time ago since I used to sit and watch the Digimon cartoon when I got in from school (21 years…and counting), and the series’ loyal fans have kept both the brand and the monsters of the Digital World alive and kicking to this very day.

The little dude in my Digivice is definitely dead, however – I really should pick up a new battery for it.

If you’ve got this far and don’t have a clue what I’m talking about (imagine how my girlfriend feels on a regular basis), then don’t worry.

I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about the new Digimon game, including when we can expect to see it on virtual shelves.

Digimon Survive Is The New Digimon Game We’ve All Been Craving!

What Is Digimon Survive?

I should answer this first before I get too carried away.

For anyone that clicked on this article by mistake or thought that Retro Dodo was some-sort-of ancient-avian-history website, Digimon are virtual monsters from the Digital World.

I’m probably going to anger a lot of people by saying this, but it’s a bit like Pokemon without the ball catching. The monsters started life in our world as Virtual Pets (think Tamagotchi) and quickly became a worldwide success on both the TV and through computer games.

Digimon Survive is the new Digimon game on the block. It’s a survival/strategy RPG with a darker twist than some of the previous games in the franchise.

On a school trip to a visit a famous temple, characters Takuma Momozuka, Minoru Hyuuga, and Aoi Shibuya discover Koromon, one of the lower evolution forms of Agumon, who also seems to be kicking back and checking out the sights.

They hear screams from the rest of their class and find that they are being attacked by feral Digimon.

Koromon evolves into Agumon to try and save the day, but the group soon find that they have somehow travelled into a completely different world.

Spooky stuff!

I would say that it’s a piece of cake, but when have you ever played an RPG that was simple?

As with every great role-playing title, the choices that you make while playing the new Digimon game will influence how the story plays out.

That covers everything from different plot paths that you can follow all the way down to differences in ‘digivolutions’ – digital evolutions.

There are multiple endings depending on the choices that you make, so there are plenty of ways to play and lots of chances to replay all of the action time and time again with different storylines.

However, there is a twist…

Remember I said that this new Digimon game was one of the darkest titles yet? Well, if you make a wrong move or a bad choice on your journey, then characters will be killed off.

Brutal!

Gameplay Types

As you move through Digimon Survive, there are four types of gameplay that will help you to…well…survive.

  • Drama Parts – Text pops up on the screen in order to tell the story of this epic adventure.
  • Search Actions – The player has to search for a way to survive (sounds quite ominous, right?)
  • Free Action – The player can walk, choose paths, speak to characters, and generally take a break from having to think about surviving.
  • Free Battle – Battle your Digimon, collect items, and be a bad-ass Digimon Trainer.

You may have noticed that the title of this article said that this new Digimon game is dropping in 2021.

It was supposed to drop in 2020, but like everything else that should have been released this year, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a knock-on effect on production times.

Digimon Survive was first announced to eager Digivice lovers back in 2018 as a release for the Nintendo Switch and the PS2. Xbox and Steam releases soon followed in another anouncement, and things were looking pretty positive for Koromon and the gang.

2018 soon became 2019, and 2019 become 2020.

COVID-19 happened, and you know the rest.

Understandably, fans of the series are now wondering whether Digimon Survive will ever be released or if it will forever be pushed further back and back until it falls into obscurity.

Kazumasa Habi, the producer of the new Digimon game has stated that the game will be coming out in 2021 while thanking Digimon lovers everywhere for their patience in waiting for the new release.

Only time will tell whether Digimon Survive will be released on time this time, but we’re feeling very hopeful.

This year has been, for want of a better word, pants. But with a new Sonic game and a new Sonic game on the cards for 2021, a new Digimon game would make next year even better!
