A heartfelt message from Hideki Kamiya is the latest in a line of exciting announcements surrounding a sequel to Okami, with the director stating that ‘his body is filled with a cautious surprise that this is not a dream, and a joy that cannot be described in words’.
I love it when we get to see into the hearts and minds of the people who make some of our favourite games and that it’s just as big an honour for them to return to past works as is it for us to play them. Okami was and very much still is a beautifully crafted game, with Hideki stating previously that he’s taken The Legend of Zelda as inspiration for this seminal adventure title. The artwork style feels like you’re diving into a water colour painting, and the immersive story of Amaterasu, Goddess of the Sun, is one that will stick with me forever.

We covered back in July that Hideki was keen to make a sequel to Okami and for Viewtiful Joe, and now here it is (one of them at the least, but the other one could be on the way)! He’s already told us in his letter that Clovers Inc is involved with the new project, and M-TWO and Machine Head Works will complete the Okami trifecta bringing people who worked on the original game back together to work their magic once more. As of now, we have no information as to when the game will drop other than Capcom saying that it will be ‘some time’, so for now, all we can do is watch the clip below over and over until it lives rent-free in our brains.
I’m excited to see what Amateratsu does next and what the graphics will look like. A lot has happened since the first Okami game dropped back in 2006, with consoles becoming much more advanced and boasting graphics that never fail to blow us away. Imagine what it would be like if Okami was crossed with the artwork in Ghost of Tsushima, for example – that could be one of the most beautiful games of all time.
For those of you wanting to go back and experience Okami, Okami HD is currently only £3.99 on Nintendo Switch or £14.99 on Steam!
